Video surveillance program coming up for vote
Video
surveillance program coming up for vote
Soon,
the Fresno City Council is voting on a proposed $1.2 million video surveillance
program. This program would place 75 video surveillance cameras throughout the
city, monitoring the activities of Fresno residents, 24 hours a day.
Video surveillance is a Big
Brother program.
It should be rejected because:
•
It threatens privacy rights,
allowing the government (and possibly other members of the public) to know what
we are doing and where we are going.
•
It is ineffective in reducing crime.
Study after study demonstrates that video surveillance cameras do not reduce
crime or the fear of crime in the long run.
•
It is expensive.
The $1.2 million proposed for the surveillance cameras could be better spent on
more effective crime reduction measures such as increased foot patrols,
community policing, and better lighting.

surveillance! Click here to take action: https://ssl.capwiz.com/aclu-nc/issues/alert/?alertid=8851756&type=CU&show_alert=1
