No Peace, No Vote: Sign the Voters For Peace Pledge
It's time to put every Congressional candidate -- incumbents
and newcomers alike -- on notice that if they want our votes, they must take a
clear, public stand on ending the Iraq war and preventing any other unjust, illegal
war.

Last March, the ever-outspoken Molly Ivins wrote that she was fed up with "every
calculating, equivocating, triangulating, straddling, hair-splitting son of a bitch"
in Washington DC. Denouncing the sparseness of antiwar candidates, she proclaimed,
"This is not a time for a candidate who will offend no one. It is time for a
candidate who takes clear stands and kicks ass."

We couldn't agree more. It's time to put every Congressional candidate -- incumbents
and newcomers alike -- on notice that if they want our votes, they must take a
clear, public stand on ending the Iraq war and preventing any other unjust, illegal
war.
We urge you to stand up with other outraged voters and sign the Voters For Peace
pledge:
"I will not vote for or support any candidate for Congress or President who does not
make a speedy end to the war in Iraq, and preventing any future war of aggression, a
public position in his or her campaign."

The 2,500th U.S. serviceperson has just died in the war in Iraq. More than 18,000
U.S. servicepeople have been wounded, many grievously. Every day this war is putting
U.S. soldiers in atrocity-producing situations where innocent civilians are killed,
as happened in Haditha (http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=3285), where a
group of U.S. Marines shot 24 Iraqi civilians execution-style, at close range --
among them a 77-year-old amputee confined to a wheelchair and seven children ranging
in age from 1 to 15. The U.S. war and occupation have killed as many as 100,000
Iraqis, destroyed the lives of countless others, and brought chaos and destruction
to an entire nation.
The majority of the people of this country, Iraqis, and active duty soldiers want to
see an end to the war. But rather than take a clear stand against the war, too many
candidates for Congress are fudging on what should be done.
As support for the war drops, these politicians are trying to distance themselves
from Bush's "stay the course" policy by criticizing the management of the war or the
decision to invade -- without calling for an end to the war. And they're hoping that
antiwar voters aren't paying enough attention to know the difference.
Let's make war and peace the central issue in the November 2006 election. Please
sign the Voters For Peace pledge now and encourage at least 10 of your friends,
relatives, coworkers and neighbors to join:
http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/ufpj/signUp.jsp?key=1350.
To help you gather signatures, we've also created a downloadable Voters For Peace
pledge form. Asking people to sign the pledge in person is a great way to reach
outside your own network and bring more people into the antiwar movement. Just find
a busy location in your community, pair up with a friend if possible, and start
striking up conversations.

Our goal is to get hundreds of thousands of voters on board so that peace becomes a
powerful political demand that politicians cannot ignore.
With hope for change,
United for Peace and Justice
P.S. Don't forget to forward this message to friends, and please consider making a
donation to help support the cost of this campaign and our other work to end the
war: http://www.unitedforpeace.org/donate.
Note: The Voters for Peace pledge is in no way an endorsement of any party or
candidate. Our lawyers have advised us that promoting the Voters for Peace Pledge is
permissible activity for 501(c)(3) groups. United for Peace and Justice is part of
the new Voters For Peace project (http://www.votersforpeace.us/), along with many
UFPJ member organizations. We encourage your active participation in this effort.
