MOM'S APPLE PIE / QUEER SPAWN

CO-PRESENTED BY the National Center for
Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and Children of Lesbians &
Gays Everywhere (COLAGE)

Before the '80s, the majority of mothers coming out
as lesbians after a divorce had their children taken
away from them. It didn't matter if they came from
an abusive relationship, and even a simple accusation
of lesbianism could turn the court against them.
These atrocious custody battles inspired the Lesbian
Mothers National Defense Fund (LMNDF) and other
lesbian rights organizations in the '70s, including
NCLR, which became the cornerstone of the lesbian
rights movement
today. In Mom's Apple Pie, director Jodi Laine
combines interviews with stirring archival footage
from a dynamic, courageous, community-building era.
The film's inspiring message will motivate and
encourage viewers to face the battles for progress
and justice yet to come.

Also screening is Queer Spawn, which
features Christopher, 12 (two gay dads, New York
City), and Kyle, 15 (two lesbian moms, Austin,
Texas), and shows how geography affects the
well-being of queer families across the country. They
and other children and adults share their experiences
with
heterosexism and homophobia. At an annual
gathering called Family Week in Provincetown, the
kids find friends and safe space that for some may
not exist during the other 51 weeks of the year.
Their wisdom is infectious and, with community
support, will join a long history of changing society
for the better.

BREAKING THE SILENCE: LGBTQ Foster Youth Tell
Their Stories

The ten short digital stories in Breaking the
Silence are powerful tales of both the successes
and failures of the foster care system for a group of
ten former foster youth who identify as lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, or queer. Over the course of a
four day workshop at the Center for Digital
Storytelling in Berkeley, these youth shared their
stories and learned to edit them into moving,
heartfelt (and sometimes heartbreaking) personal
videos. Through these youths' thoughtful, honest,
and insightful words, we are given a glimpse of what
it is like to be an LGBTQ foster youth as well as what
we can do to better support our youth in state
care.

The workshop was organized by the Y.O.U.T.H.
Training Project of San Francisco State's Bay Area
Academy, and was supported by funding from the
National Center for Lesbian Rights. Each group will
use these stories to help educate child welfare
workers about issues facing LGBTQ youth in the
foster care system.

tax-paying, America-loving political humorist and

booms and busts, Disneyfication and Walmartization,
gay movements and gay markets, lesbian chic and
queer eyes, and ten presidential inaugurals. She still
believes that humor gets us through peacetime,
wartime, and scoundrel time.

her.
