The Jomon culture, with the world's oldest ceramics and multitudes of dashing female figurines; depictions of female shamans in Haniwa art; Shinto religion; Chinese influence and the advent of Buddhism; literary women of the Heian period; the indigenous Ainu, and a brief excursion to Okinawa, another stronghold of women shamans; village life and women's arts; early modern Japan; female activists and artists.
