Mumbo Gumbo Human Rights Benefit Dance June 10
Don't miss the Mumbo Gumbo Human Rights Benefit Dance in Davis on Saturday June 10. Here's the info:
Hey Folks,
Wanna have a great time, dance under the stars, eat, drink and be merry... and support human rights all at the same time?
Here's your chance. Mumbo Gumbo is coming to Davis for the 15th Annual "Hands Around the World" Human Rights Benefit Dance! This is absolutely, positively, without any doubt whatsoever... my favorite event of the year. Those of you who have subscribed to this list since way back in the 1990's know that I've been saying this for years. If you've been fortunate enough to attend this concert, you also know I'm not whistling Dixie. This really is a marvelous event... as New York Yankee immortal Yogi Berra put it, "You could look it up." Mumbo Gumbo is, for my money, the best concert band in the area, and the positive vibe you will experience at this annual Davis event is uplifting beyond words.
Wait, there's more. This year, my favorite event of the year is going to be even better. How?
Good question. It's going to be even better this year because Will and Jane Lotter, two of the most dedicated human rights activists and most amazing people on the planet, have generously decided to direct a portion of the proceeds from the concert to Children's Hope, the humanitarian wing of your Sacramento Progressive Alliance ... and we didn't even ask. (Did I mention how cool Jane and Will are?) The rest of the proceeds will go to the wonderful projects that Will and Jane and their comrades in Davis have been supporting in Central America for many years, so you really will be serving humanity even as you're having a blast... how often does that combo come along?
But wait, it gets better still. Food will be provided by Dos Coyotes, the most delicious Mexican food in the area.
Did I hear you ask about beer? No worries. After building up a Mojave Desert thirst from shaking your groove thing under the stars on a balmy summer evening in Davis, you will mostly certainly be able to enjoy a frosty cold... perhaps even two, as long as you bring a designated driver. : )
Sounds fun, huh? At least for one night, you can find a little piece of paradise right here on this troubled planet we call Earth. Make sure to mark your calendars and buy your tickets now, because you don't want to miss this one... I promise.
Can't wait to see you all there!
Peace,
Paul B

HUMAN RIGHTS BENEFIT CONCERT
SATURDAY, JUNE 10
On Saturday evening, June 10 at 8:00 PM the popular musical group Mumbo Gumbo will again play for the "Hands Around the World" Human Rights Benefit dance outdoors at the Davis Art Center (corner of Covell & F Sts.). This is the 15th year Mumbo Gumbo has played to benefit humanitarian projects sponsored by the Davis Religious Community for Sanctuary (DRCS) and the Davis Friends of Rutilio Grande, Davis Sister City in El Salvador.
Come early (gates open at 7:00 pm) and enjoy food by Dos Coyotes or bring your own picnic dinner. Bring a blanket or a low chair to sit on. The concert will move inside if it rains. Dance proceeds support the following humanitarian programs in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Haiti.
Dance tickets at Armadillo Music, 225 G St., Davis, and at The Beat in Sacramento, 1700 J St. are $15 general, $8 students. Children 12 and under accompanied by parents admitted free. Tickets also on sale Saturdays at the Davis Farmer's Market.
EL SALVADOR:
o COMUNIDAD RUTILIO GRANDE, a returned refugee community and Davis Sister City in El Salvador. Funds will provide scholarships for children in Rutilio Grande to attend secondary school in a neighboring community after completing primary school in Rutilio Grande.
GUATEMALA:
o INDIGENOUS WIDOWS group in Santiago Atitlan. The leader, Concepcion "Chonita" Mendoza, a widow herself, seeks out the poorest widows in the village, most who live alone, and helps them with health and nutrition problems. Many of the widows, including Chonita, lost their husbands during the 1980's when government sponsored death squads operated with impunity in Guatemala.
o FAMDEGUA (The Association of Families of the Detained & Disappeared in Guatemala) a human rights group consisting of people who have lost family members to the death squads. FAMDEGUA has conducted over thirty-five exhumations of mass clandestine cemeteries resulting from the more than six hundred massacres carried out by the Guatemala military in the 1980s.
o COVIGUA- A non-governmental program committed to improving conditions for people with disabilities in Guatemala, allowing for their full inclusion in Guatemala society. It is composed of persons with and without disabilities.
