Progressive Voter Guide
Recomendations for California Primary Election -- Tuesday, June 6, 2006
State Offices:
Governor: Phil Angelides, clearly the more progressive candidate. He led the fight against Arnold Schwarzenegger assault on teachers, nurses, and fire fighters.
Secretary of State: Deborah Bowen.
Superintendent of Public Instruction: Sara Knopp. The incumbent is the author of the legislation requiring a high school exit exam and an advocate of the current school accountability programs. We oppose him.
Congressional races:
3rd. C.D. Dr. Bill Durston
4th. C.D. Charlie Brown.
11th C.D. Jerry McNerney
Assembly Seats:
Robert Haswell. 4th. AD.
County Board of Supervisors:
Larry Carr, 2nd District
Sacramento City Council:
Lauren Hammond, 5th District
Initiatives:
Prop. 81. Library Bonds: Yes
Provides funds to build public libraries.
Prop. 82. Pre School for All: Yes.
Provides free, voluntary, quality pre school for all 4 year olds in California.

Voting is the most sublime form of submission to state power. It is always advertised by schools, corporations, the media, and their lackeys as being an expression of your "voice" - a voice identical to all the others. (As if genuine dialogue with the politians who have the contempt and the gall to represent you in possible in the first place). Just as capitalists encounter you as so much labor power, politicans encounter you as a vote, a general equivalent representing your degredation and the degredation of representaton in a world dominated by exchange. And this is ezactly what is expected of you: to be a good spectator of politics and participate in democracy, a game that is all fun and games for your rulers unless you question the rules of the game.
The truth is that all political parties are capitalist; they vie for the management of the political conditions under which capital is accumulated and reproduced. Through your coerced participation in this capitalist system, your life comes to be controlled by others - your creative energy and capacity for labor is exploited in exchange for a wage. The progressive and socialist organization that encourage your participation in the political spectical specialize in management your discontent and just want to see the same system run a different way, but it is quite clear that the left wing of captialism (or state capitalism) just means more work for a new boss. Any practical opposition to capitalism and the way it impoverishes our everyday lives necessarily falls outside the realm of political ideology.

This is a list of Democrat party moderates and is in no way a guide for progressive voters.
Progressivism would involve opening debates to all qualified candidates, which Angelides, as chair of the Demo Party, made sure never happened. There are 7 candidates in the Dem Party primary and Angelides is not in any way the most progressive. A better choice is Barbara Becnel.
And when the primary is over we'll be bombarded with Anybody But Arnold rhetoric and told to vote for Steve Millionaire Westly over true progressives like Peter Camejo or Janice Jordan - the Peace and Freedom candidate.
Forget phony progressive rhetoric and vote for the candidate of the only socialist party on the ballot in November: Janice Jordan. If you consider yourself progressive and still are registered in the conservative Democrat Party, vote for Becnel, then abandon the duopoly dinosaur and join the P&F or Greens, at least!
