Mothers confront sons' deportation

by Benito Jiménez, El Tecolote (reposted)
Olina Calderón and Ana Corea celebrated Mother’s Day fighting for their children, who face deportation by the Immigration Service. Calderón says the U.S. government intends to deport her two sons, Gerson, 20 and Oscar, 17, to Central America. The two have grown-up, trouble free in Oakland, where they have carved out a better future than they could have in their native and impoverished country of Honduras, says Calderón.
In 1999, after they were abandoned by a smuggler, both boys were arrested by the Border Patrol in the Arizona desert, along with seven other relatives.Since then, they have been fighting in court to remain in the U.S. Successive rulings by the judge have been adverse. The history of Ana Corea is similar – except that her son Johari, 17, has already been given a specific date to leave the U.S.“Who can assure me that my son will be safe in El Salvador? There is no one there who can watch out for him and make sure he’s okay, being the situation of that country today. No one can tell me the situation is not better here,” said Corea.

Corea is member of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).On May 10, accompanied by more members of ACORN, Corea and Calderón and their children protested in front of the Immigration office in San Francisco. They demanded justice and common sense, and reproached the prevalence of migration politics that ignore human dignity and the undeniable contribution of immigrants to the U.S.“ACORN believes that immigrant families who live here, work hard, and pay taxes need a legal path to citizenship – this is the American way,’’ said Corea, who is a legal resident of the U.S.ACORN is calling on lawmakers and the federal government to support comprehensive immigration reform that would provide a legal path to citizenship for immigrants who are working and paying taxes in the United States. Families who have been directly impacted by the lack of immigration reform stand to be affected more so if HR 4437 passes the Senate.
