Lakota Elder Madonna Thunder Hawk will speak in San Francisco on Tuesday, May 30th at 6:30pm, at New College of California. She is a veteran of every modern Native American struggle, from the occupation of Alcatraz to the siege of Wounded Knee. She is a long-time community organizer with a range of experience in Indian rights protection, cultural preservation, economic development and environmental justice. Thunder Hawk was a co-founder and spokesperson for the Black Hills Alliance which blocked Union Carbide from mining uranium on sacred Lakota land. She co-founded Women of All Nations and the Black Hills Protection Committee (later the HeSapa Institute, through which she has worked to protect the many sacred sites within the region's treaty lands). Thunder Hawk is an eloquent voice for Native America.

This was a great evening. BACORR- with the help of Madonna's friends in the Bay Area- helped raise almost 500.00 for Madonna's work in South Dakota. Madonna reminded us that issues of fertility, reproduction and abortion should not be seen as issues that exist independantly of the larger issues of economic, political and spiritual concerns within and without the Native America community..thank you for your work, Madonna!
