The Project, May 2006
The Project is a monthly radical newpaper for the UCSC campus and Santa Cruz Community. It is run in a non-hierarchical fashion mainly by UCSC students, with an emphasis in anti-capitalism and local activism aimed at democratizing the university system.

The purpose of this newspaper collective is to document and inspire strategic radical actions that are relevant to local, regional, and global socioeconomic justice. We believe independent media plays a crucial role in facilitating dialogue, organizing mass mobilizations, and encouraging daily acts of resistance.

...that the PROJECT takes up the anti-homeless SLEEPING BAN which criminalizes homeless people in Santa Cruz and on the UCSC campus for the act of sleeping.
Since there exists insufficient shelter in the City of Santa Cruz for the 2,000 estimated homeless population, this law is cruel and unusual punishment, little different than debtors laws which penalize those who cannot afford an (expensive) roof over their heads.
Here's also hoping that the PROJECT will also go on record opposing the 15-minute law which was recently blamed on UCSC COLLEGE STUDENTS as the main culprit, whereas activists universally claim it is an anti-homeless law. This ordinance is scheduled for a 2nd reading on TUESDAY, May 23rd, 2006.
AND here's hoping that the PROJECT also goes on record demanding that the panhandling law be stripped of the draconian provisions which have nothing to do with aggressive solicitations.
