U.S. Supporting Walords in Mogadishu Fighting
The U.S. tangentially has admitted to supporting Somali warlords in the supposed fight against "Islamists" who are challenging the power of the walords. A lesson in "enemy of my enemy" politics.
In recent fighting in Mogadishu, over 100 civilians have been killed and many more combatants killed and injured which has pitted Somalia's powerful walords against what have been branded "Islamists" by the US DOD. Somalia has no central government, or at least one with any significant power, and has not for over 10 years. The country has fragmented into provinces ruled by walords, like those which attacked US soldiers in the "black hawk down" incident. In a typical about-face, the government now has admitted in statements about Somalia regarding recent fighting that the US will fight Islamic extremism where ever it may arise. The BBC and European media have widely reported that the US is supporting the warlords, who have served as a defacto military dictatorship since the collapse of the central government. Feelings in Somalia are that the warlords are now a cover for US covert operations.
