The battle for the rights of immigrants has reached unprecedented levels this past month. Some have called this movement the new "civil rights struggle of our time." 10,000 in San Francisco. 20,000 in Oakland. 600,000 in Chicago 1 million in Los Angeles. And this is only the beginning.

Filipinos For Affirmative Action (FAA) is hosting a conference on May 13 entitled, "Advancing Social Justice: Honoring Our Past, Building Our Future."

This one-day gathering conference will commemorate and build on the 100-year anniversary of formal Filipino immigration to the United States. We will discuss the current immigrant rights fight, and other important issues affecting our community and the health of the institutions that make up its infrastructure.

Keynote speeches will be offered by Dean Alegado, chair of the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Hawai'i, and Agnes Briones Ubalde, Director of the Small Business Commission in the City of San Francisco and the highest ranking Filipino/a in the Administration.

Workshops will include topics such as Civic Engagement, which will bring together Filipinos from across the state to discuss voter education and mobilization strategies, and Low-wage Workers, which will convene Filipino worker centers from across the country to share opportunities and challenges in organizing working class Filipinos to fight for social change. Other workshops include: Youth, Preservation of Community, Newcomers, World War II Veterans, and Immigrant Rights.
