Save Commander in Chief

by NOW
Great cast. Decent time slot. Women all over the country planned their Tuesday nights around the show, rounding up their daughters to eat popcorn, critique and bask in wish-fulfillment glow.

Was it too good to last? Not if you take action NOW.
Will ABC's "Commander in Chief" Be Cancelled? Fight Back.
Scene from Commander in Chief

The first woman to be president of the United States is about to get the boot.

It was almost too good to be true: Geena Davis as the first woman president of the United States! Donald Sutherland as the evil Speaker of the House!

Great cast. Decent time slot. Women all over the country planned their Tuesday nights around the show, rounding up their daughters to eat popcorn, critique and bask in wish-fulfillment glow.

Was it too good to last? Not if you take action NOW.

Although critically acclaimed for fast-paced writing and superb acting by a cast of real honest-to-goodness movie stars, "Commander in Chief" suddenly went on hiatus. And now, after only two return episodes in a new time slot on a different night (and incidentally, opposite blockbuster "ER"), it's being cancelled.

But it's not too late. Let the network hear from you.

* Call ABC Primetime Entertainment President Steve McPherson at 818-460-0000 today and let him know that you want ABC to give "Commander in Chief" a fair shake.
* If you prefer, you can go to the ABC website where you can input your name and address, select "Commander in Chief" from the drop-down menu of programming and leave a simple message of support for the show, such as: Please bring back "Commander in Chief."

The show has hardly been given time to develop an audience. Some of the best shows on television have taken - and been allowed by the networks - time to grow a dedicated group of viewers. Witness the long-running hit "NYPD Blue." "Commander in Chief's" sudden disappearance and rescheduling was a recipe for failure.

When I watched the first episode, I held my breath, hoping that Geena Davis would be strong and realistic, not sappy, and not a caricature of what ABC/Disney thinks of a female president. And week after week, I wasn't disappointed.

Best of all, my two daughters enjoy the show as much as I do, and I know it's preparing them for the day when the first woman president walks into the real White House. We know from experience that television can lead and empower cultural change for the good, and "Commander in Chief" is a great beginning.

Is it possible that the very real chance of both political parties nominating female candidates for president in 2008 is so threatening that networks are being pressured to stop building the notion that it could be reality?

In spite of the inside politics of the TV business, a committed audience still has power with the media. An outcry from women viewers brought back "Cagney and Lacey" years ago, and revived "Judging Amy" more recently. We can do it again.

Let your voice be heard loud and clear. Call today. We've done it before and we can do it again. The message is simple: Keep "Commander in Chief" on the air.

We can do it!

Commander in Chief is a good show. We have so few these days. Please don't cancel it. If you would leave it alone and give it a chance, it will do well. But you shouldn't cancel a show that you haven't given a chance.

I'm an independent involved in local politics and thought the writing in the begging was excellent. I do not watch alot of Network TV and became a great fanof Commander in chief a show my wife inssited we had to watch. I had to DVR the show as not to miss. Two tuesdays a month are town meetings or chamber of commerce meetings. I would race home and stay up late just to watch it. I miss my Mackenzie, the characters and the drama .... the back stabbing politicians. The show had such great promise. I do not get the big deal over American Idol. I tunned in once and have never watched since. On a positve note for ABC I never would have watched Bostin Legal if not for Commander in chief. I now DVR that show. Please bring back commander in chief in a time slot that we can follow.
No wonder the networks don't get me to watch netweork TV. They need to put on better shows and then stick with them. It took a long time before we caught on to friends or seinfeld or frazer. Network executives just want to get stupid mindless people watching American Idol or deal or no deal. The best shows display great drama or character relationships.

What's going on? You want us to like Commander in Chief? We're crazy about it and schedule our lives around the time of its showing. It's one of the most meaningful, well acted, well scripted programs on TV. Scared of upsetting political parties who just can't get used to the idea of a woman President? Get over it. This show might have prepared or at least informed people that it really isn't as scary an idea as they thought. I'm ashamed of TV producers who constantly feed us baby food for tiny minds. Just because we elected George Bush doesn't mean that all (51%) of our minds are mush. Give us some encouragement. Show us we are capable to making informed decisions by informing us.
Commander in Chief was honestly the only show I ever saw other than the local news. I'm not a television watcher, but this show I loved, saw every episode from start. I looked so forward to it and discussed the show with my co-workers each week. I was finally in the conversations at work about a show I really felt was worth watching. Big mistake to take this off......I would have loved to have been President of the U.S. myself....what power!! Who ever decided to cancel this show made the biggest mistake ever!!!!!!! Please bring it back...............

CIC is a quality show that has been horribly mistreated by ABC. Its no wonder it has not performed when we never know when or if it will air. Put it in a timeslot, leave it alone, and let it build a following again.

Commander in Chief should not be cancelled. People always say how video games and cartoons influence children to take certain actions. Well maybe this show is the same to women and teenagers. Maybe this show will influence them to take action and to run for president, showing that we do have good leadership roles and that women can lead the country into a successful state. I hope the show is not cancelled. I am a teenager myself and I idolize what Geena Davis has done throughout the show. Please do not cancel the show. Give it another chance to grow.
Thanks.

Geena Davis has done a fantastic job of going toe-to-toe with Donald Sutherland, Kyle Secor, and the others to make this one of my favorite weekly dramas. I'm not a sitcom watcher, and the only contest-type of reality TV I watch is Project Runway--because it involves spontaneous creativity. Geena Davis and the writers of the show have developed a character that's believable, responsible, and dynamic. The incomparable Donald Sutherland has nailed every role he's played all the way back to his portrayal of the character "Pinkley" in The Dirty Dozen. And Kyle Secor was always a favorite of mine as a flawed detective on Homicide: Life on the Streets.

Commander in Chief deserves network support. There are a lot of real fans out here!!!

I watched (or Tivo'd) this show every week and enjoyed it very much. I hope the network will reconsider its removal of this quality programming from the air.

Commander in Chief was a wonderful show and I would like to see it continue. Just when it was getting some kind of a following they changed time slots and that destroys a show. Please bring it back!

Why do the shows that are entertaining get cancelled? I am so tired of reality shows it isn't even funny. This show was entertaining and well written. Bring it back along with Invasion.
by Please. Get active.
Could we spend less time on lobbying for TV shows (however worthy) and more time focusing on supporting Pro-choice activists? I attended this years so-called "March for Life" in San Francisco. NOW, where were you? I mean the national NOW, not the local org. And where was Planned Parenthood and NARAL?

Missing in action.

As the Religious Right gets stronger, and the last clinic in Jackson, Mississippi is closed, where are the major fundraising orgs for a woman's right to choose? Growing new advocates and making young women aware of the risk to their rights? Or lying low and waiting for the storm to pass?

Like millions and millions of people, I never watched the show. This is why it got cancelled. Its ratings were horrid. Just like Ellen Degenerates show, it was cancelled because the Ratings were not good. It had nothing to do with some right wing conspiracy......

PS. I spend my free time with my family and raising money for children fighting cancer. Maybe you should consider doing something worth while instead of whining about a pathetic TV show

this is one of the most interesting, well written shows on the air - in a league with grey's Anatomy - a great ensemble, folling in th efootsteps of West Wing. Bring it back!
by so what have you done lately?
I understand they've banned abortion in South Dakota and are on the verge of denying choice to women in Mississippi. Do you think there's something more important you could be doing? Hmm?

And the TV show? We need positive role models in real life, not phony TV shows.
by Get back to your mission statement
It is utterly outrageous that while Rome burns, you choose to play the role of Nero. Get back to your mission. South Dakota's down, and Mississippi is the next to go. Where will you be during the next year as women's natural authority over their bodies is dismantled, brick by brick? You simply havent done enough community activsm, locally, on this issue in the last two years.
Where were you on Jan. 21st of this year? How can you ask us to pay attention to TV shows while anti choice communities amass their numbers in our streets. They would have walked practically unchallenged, except for the efforts of the active few who organized counter protests, and on-going community forums to enliven and re-vitalize the reproductive justice community.
Your absence of visible support is absolutely unforgivable. Your call to action to support a show that ONLY provides virtual leadership is absolutely absurd.
