The Transfer of Parcel A at Hunters Point and related issues

by Francisco Da Costa (frandacosta [at] att.net)
The transfer of Parcel A on Hunters Point under the direction of former Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr. and Sophie Maxwell has come to haunt San Francisco. One must remember that the constituents of San Francisco voted by over 87% to clean up the entire Hunters Point Shipyard to residential standards. That has not happened. The SF Board of Supervisors, the SF Planning Department, the SF Redevelopment Agency, and of course Lennar Bayview Hunters Point LLC all have agreed to build 1600 homes in the middle of Chernobyl that is Parcel A. We really do not have any leadership under Sophie Maxwell who is a sell out and on the take. We really do not have any good leadership in the Bayview. We have lots of folks that talk the talk but cannot walk the walk.
Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr. is behind the scenes pushing for the development of homes on toxic sites in the Bayview and all over the City. He started it with Parcel A on Hunters Point. He first first fired the enitire Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) linked to Hunters Point Shipyard and formed his own CAC. He did it at Mission Bay and continues his relationship with Lennar BVHP LLC.

He then with Jesse Blout, Marcia Rosen, and Michael Cohen pushed for a Disposition and Development document increasing the size of the CAC to over 28 from 9 and having over 40 meetings with varius sub-committees in one single month. Willie L. Brown Jr. played the legal game but he played it in the most unfair manner. All this with Parcel A and its conveyance and development by Lennar BVHP LLC.

Parcel A was conveyed to the City and County of San Francisco by the United States Navy for just one dollar. Sophie Maxwell has always said that she is proud to have participated in the discussion and the conveyance of Parcel A.

Of course the dumb, inept, and very arrogant Supervisor from District 10 that is Bayview Hunters Pont and Visitation Valley has no clue about mitigation, abatement, and what a Super Fund site really is. What can one expect from an electrician that could not pass a simple test in San Francisco and had to go all the way to Oakland to pass one? Sophie has not been to College much less Junior College.

Parcel A was conveyed to San Francisco and Parcel A has many radiological hotspots and these must be cleaned. Notice that no work has been done in months. 6 months ago the plans were to lay down the foundation of the homes on Parcel A.

Right now the old sewer pipes on Parcel A have been contaminated with radiological elements are being removed and no one knows what really is happening. This is being done by the City and San Francisco that has NO money - or so the City says.

I know the Department of Public Works that says it has NO money - it is doing some work but there has been No open process and no one at City Hall knows much. The SF Board of Supervisors know little and Mayor Gavin Newsom talks the talk but cannot walk the walk. Mayor Gavin Newsom has sold out to Lennar on Treasure Island and at Hunters Point and at Candlestick Park. All the time shady deals are being done and the constituents of San Francisco are being kept in the dark. There is NO sunshine.

Recently the Hunters Point Power Plant was shut down. Sophie Maxwell and some crooks are busy planning to build homes on toxic sites where once the HP Power Plant stood and polluted the land, the air, and the water. It has good views but it is very polluted land. Much as Heron's Head Park is very polluted aka Pier 98.

The constituents of San Francisco are kept in the dark because the whole area that is Bayview Hunters Point has been declared a Project Area. The San Francisco Redevelopment Agency has control and since it is a quasi-State agency the SF Board of Supervisors, the Mayor, and other SF Department Heads have been kept in the dark becuase they have and will have NO direct input.

A case in point how can San Francisco call itself a Green City and then clear cut over 400 Mature Trees on Parcel A?

How can be call ourselves a Green City and yet agree to place 3 Combustion Turbines at Pier 80?

How can we now think of building homes where once stood the toxic spewing power plant without a sound Environmental Impact Report? Only under the dumb Sophie Maxwell and some Black leaders can such projects go ahead without sound opposition.

The SF Board of Supervisor, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Mayor Gavin Newsom, Senator Diane Feinstein have all sold out the constituents of San Francisco and the constituents of Bayview Hunters Point in particular.

We have over 450 toxic hot spots and the City and County of San Francisco has not done any clean up in over 30 years. Now it wants to address the issues under SFRA?

Parcle B, C, D, E, and F under the Bay have not been cleaned and have serious pollution issues that adversely impacts the whol City of San Franciso and Bayview Hunters Point in particular. It is wrong NOT to address Cumulative Pollution and very wrong to build 1600 homes in the middle of Chernobyl that is Parcel A on Hunters Point Shipyard.

What does Mayor Gavin Newsom to say about these issues? What do the Black leaders including the many Black Churches have to say about the pollution issues?

Do they understand the facts? What do the so called Black Leaders that want to run for Supervisor know about the real facts? What power do they have to make good and bring mitigation measures to the community?

First there was the transfer of Parcel A. Now the proposed building of homes once the Power Plant site is made available to San Francisco Redevelopment Agency and with the help of Mayor Gavin Newsom and Sophie Maxwell.

It is time to vote out Sophie Maxwell and bring good leadership that is educated on issues and have a proven track record. We do not want any sell outs.
