School Beat: The Dollars and Cents of SFUSD

by Lisa Schiff, Beyond Chron (reposted)
Understanding education finance is a challenge for even the most dedicated public school supporters and budget hawks. The complexity is not just at the state level, but also descends into how the budget appears at the local level.
We all want to know where the dollars go, what the financial repercussions of proposed decisions are, and what the gap really is between what we have and what we need. The past two years of budget cuts and projections of further cuts in the future have made this more than just an academic interest, not that it ever was just that.

Next Saturday, May 13th starting at 10am at Everett Middle School (450 Church St. at 16th St) the district is holding a workshop on the budget to give people a chance to ask the questions that have been on our minds throughout this past year and undoubtedly longer.

The workshop is being organized by Board of Education (BOE) member Jill Wynns. According to a flyer sent out, on hand to answer questions will be SFUSD Chief of Policy and Planning Myong Leigh, as well as BOE members Eric Mar and Norman Yee, who sit on the school board's Budget Committee chaired by Commissioner Wynns.
Those who have questions already formulated can submit them in advance to a special email address that's been set up: budget [at] sfusd.edu . The rest of us should keep a running tab and bring them the day of the event.

One of the big unknowns about our district's budget is how much we will actually be getting from the state. The timing of this workshop has been set up so that it will happen right after the state has issued its revised budget, which will take into account the increased revenues we've been hearing so much about. The new state budget details are scheduled to come out on May 12th, at which point we'll know how much money the Governor is returning to public education, or in other words, how badly he wants our vote this fall.
