Protesters march through East Oakland

by reposts
OAKLAND - Thousands of people are marching peacefully along a major road as part of nationwide protests, including boycotts of work and school, to support for immigrants' rights,.
Starting from 98th Avenue, demonstrators holding American and Mexican flags, waving noisemakers and shouting slogans through bullhorns walked and drove west along International Boulevard on their way to a 1:30 p.m. rally outside the city's federal building at 1301 Clay Street.

Oakland police estimated the crowd at between 4,000 and 6,000 people by the time it hit International Boulevard and 42nd Avenue.

At least several thousand people marched seven miles from East Oakland to the federal building in downtown Oakland today in a massive show of support for immigration rights.

At a rally at the federal building, after the crowd had dwindled to about 500 people, U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, said she strongly opposes efforts to close America's border with Mexico, stating, "We will not let the Minute Men and vigilantes drive our immigration policies!"

Lee drew a large cheer when she said, "We reject the divisive politics of scapegoating."
