Students March for Immigrant Rights!
National Immigrant Boycott/Day of Action
Students from UC Davis and Sac State will be marching from two locations in
Sacramento starting early in the morning.
The students from UC Davis, undergrad and law students, will be marching
from Franklin Blvd in Sacramento at 8am. They will be marching to join the
event at Southside Park on T and 8th.
The students from Sac State will be leaving their campus in the morning to
also join the community event at Southside Park.
Both peaceful demonstrations are being sponsored by the National Latina/o
Law Student Association, UC Davis MEChA and Sac State MEChA. The students
have been trained on security issues and will be accompanied by trained
legal observers. "We want to make sure that when students decide to
exercise their right to demonstrate, they do it in a safe and organized
manner. This was our response to some of the incidents of student walkouts
and disciplinary actions taken by schools and police," said Esmeralda
Zendejas, UC Davis law student.
On April 10, students and community members marched 10 miles from Davis to
Sacramento to show their solidarity with immigrants and the journey they
make to get to this country.
"This country cannot continue to treat immigrants as second-class citizens.
The solution is legalization and not criminalization. Tomorrow will
hopefully show the world, that immigrants and immigrant labor cannot be
taken for granted," said Mercedes Castillo, a UCD Law Student and the Chair
of the National Latina/o Law Student Association.
Tomorrow the students hope that their marches will encourage other community
members to join them.
