Held in Dhaka, Teen Terrorist Suspect Now in U.S. Custody
A 19-year-old American citizen of Bangladeshi descent has been charged with lying to federal officials on issues linked to an "ongoing terrorism investigation."
Ehsanul Islam Sadequee, who was born in the U.S. and lived in Atlanta, Georgia, appeared briefly before a U.S. magistrate in a Brooklyn court April 22, soon after he was flown in from Bangladesh, where he had been briefly detained by local authorities.
At press time, Sadequee was being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, according to Robert Nardoza, a spokesman with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York.
Nardoza told India-West that Sadequee had not entered a plea yet, and that a second hearing has been set for April 28.
The federal affidavit against Sadequee states that on Aug. 18, 2005, two officials of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force consensually interviewed Sadequee at the JFK International Airport to determine where in Bangladesh, and perhaps beyond, he was traveling, his prior foreign travel and who his associates and contacts were.
Sadequee, who was on his way to Bangladesh, purportedly to get married, told JTTF that in January last year, he traveled alone to Canada to stay with his aunt there.
The affidavit alleges that Sadequee had in fact traveled to Canada on March 13, 2005, together with 21-year-old Syed Haris Ahmed, also of Atlanta and a Georgia
Tech student, to meet with three other FBI targets of an ongoing terrorism investigation.
The affidavit says that the two young men met at an Atlanta mosque.
When federal agents interviewed Ahmed one day after interviewing Sadequee at the New York airport, Ahmed allegedly told them he had gone to Toronto with Sadequee, the affidavit says.
