Iranian-American Media Air Frustrations With U.S.-Iran Relations
Though they may be suspicious of Iran's recent nuclear moves, journalists in Iranian-American media spot hypocrisy in Western demands that Iran stop its nuclear program. Peter Micek is a media monitor and writer for New America Media.
SAN FRANCISCO--Whether or not Iran pursues nuclear weapons, say Iranian journalists in the United States, the rules of the nuclear playing field should apply equally to Western and Persian powers.
"Let's change the paradigm," says Jamileh Davoudi, of Pezhvak of Persia, a San Jose, Calif.-based Iranian-American newspaper, "instead of binding ourselves to the question of which countries should have the right to develop nuclear power." She recommends the United Nations investigate and castigate officials of both the Iranian and U.S. governments for human rights crimes.
Defense, not aggression, would lead Iran to pursue nuclear weapons, says Pezhvak's chief editor, Shahbaz Taheri. "Iran was attacked by Iraq, ending up in the slaughter of a whole generation of Iranians with the help of the United States and Europe," he says. "Also, Iran's neighbors India, Pakistan, Russia and Israel have nuclear bombs as well."
Taheri says he opposes nuclear weapons and tries to educate readers on the risks of depending on nuclear power. But, "weapons of mass destruction, in general, should be dismantled in all countries, not just select countries that the U.S. or Europe decides on."
