Youth And Power Was A Success

by Carlos Mendoza, Brown Beret (scg831 [at] yahoo.com)
Our 6th anual Youth And Power event was a great success, it attracted youth from Watsonville, San Jose, Salinas, Santa Cruz, Aptos, the Bay area, as well as L.A. and other locations.
pict1385.jpg
Youth And Power 2006, is an event put together by the Watsonville Brown Berets to educate the youth about issues that affect us as a community and the social justice movement as well as entertain the youth with great performers and special guests. This year we had music by Cihuatl Tonali, Para La Gente, Warlordz/Gambit, Brown Berets' rap group Dangerous Minds, and special performer Immortal Technique spitting revolutionary knowledge to the youth, we also had great spoken word by Patricia Poston. We had speaker Adisa Banjoko author of Lyrical Swords speaking about the theme of this years Youth And Power "Brown And Black Power" in addition we had a very special guest out of Chicago son of late Black Panther Fred Hampton and chairman of the prisoners of conscience commitee, Fred Hampton Jr. likewise speaking about the importance of Black and Brown Unity. other performers included the hip-hop dance troop and DJ GI Joe.
The vets hall was full to its capacity, it was peaceful throughout the night and seeds where planted in these young minds, the future soldiers of the movement.

Its too bad people still think that homophobia and misogyny are revolutionary.
by Magda
Hope you don't mean Immortal Technique. He is one of the most respectful artists out there. He stopped the show in San Fran when a drunk guy started hitting a woman, and spent half the night reminding the men in the crowd who has had their backs throughout time, and who deserves their respect and support always: women. He talks about the fact that so many women have been raped and assaulted, and how you may never even know if your sister, mother, or girlfriend has had to live with that if she decides not to tell you. He was vocally welcome to everyone and I never heard him say ANYTHING negative about anyone's sexuality. He advocates non-violence and respect for the earth, urging kids to become doctors and lawyers to help their people out more than he feels he can as an artist. If that's who you're talking about being a mysogynist and homophobe, you might be confusing your revolutionaries.
by danielsan
No confusing 'revolutionaries' here... Immortal Technique's first two albums are jam-packed with homophobia, bitch=female, egoism, and misogyny.

They also contain a few of the finest, most articulate, dense, thought-provoking, hardcore history teaching rhymes set to east-coast beats in years.

His set at Youth & Power was full of exactly that ("point of no return" "the 4th branch" "peruvian cocaine" "bin laden" and a couple others), and his comments to the crowd between songs demonstrated his thoughtfulness and consciousness of his place as a teacher, example,... role model even.

His third album drops soon. I'm as curious as any to see if *he* still thinks mysogyny and homophobia are revolutionary, and I'm as hopeful as any that he lives up to his words. At Youth and Power he said something along the lines of if I were in control, hip hop would be about the lyrics and not the beats and marketability.

We'll see if he takes his own advice. His set on Monday was on point, no doubt. I'm hopeful but conscious of his sizeable genderpolitik issues.
Yes, of course I am talking about him. IAs long as we continue to celebrate and support homophobia and misogyny, queer people and women will never feel safe in the struggle. Why do these just become small issues, and not grounds for an uncompromising critique/ confrontation? Why are Cultural Nationalism and some hip misreading of class counted as “revolutionary” and queer issues not? Empire is built on the bodies of women and queers, and it is our task to end this tradition, not simply give it a make-over and call it “revolutionary”. I can tell you that fool does not know hardcore until he spends a day being a transwomen, HIV + person, or some other kind of queer.
by 1female
Mary- I agree with ya, hopefully we can see a change in his beliefs and aditudes towards women and homosexuals. But don't doubt his ability to come around. Noone is born knowing everything, we can only work with what we've got. I don't doubt people's potential to learn. I also very much disagree with your statement that he doesn't know hardcore- don't be so ignorant, you don't know what he's been through. As a woman who has been raped and abused I can still see the potential for other's suffering. You can't measure racism and sexism and homophobia against one another, human suffering is just that.
by friend
Nice photos! The text that said 'Brown Berets' in it was a little distracting, though. Maybe put something in one of the corners instead?
by Mary
Yes, 1female, I agree with you. I am not saying what he has or has not been through is not real. What I am saying is that the whole idea of being “hardcore” is a product of masculinity. So then, I am interested in what gets to count as hardcore, and what gets to count as “pussy shit” or “faggy”. You know?
Yes homophobia, sexism , racism, colonization; they are all connected, that is simply my point. However, would the Brown Barrettes invite a racist rapper? I would hope not, but a homophobic misogynist one seems to raise very few questions.
It seems we have not learned much from the very important black feminist critiques of the Panthers.
I just get tiered of seeing this shit played out over and fucking over.

by Watsonville Brown Berets
Three years ago Mario Africa of the Move Organization (and founder of AWOL magazine) introduced the Watsonville Brown Berets to Immortal Technique. Since then we have established a working relationship in order to empower Black and Brown youth of impoverished communities both on the West and East coast. During Jim Ghilchrist failed attempt to run for congress, Immortal Technique became involved in the struggle for immigrant rights.

On October 29th (the same day the Watsonville Brown Berets and other orgs confronted the Minutemen in Sacramento) Tech declared to launch the Invasion tour specifically to address the injustices that were being done on the most vilified immigrant population, Latinos. The Invasion tour was set to target youth throughout the entire southwest. About three months ago Immortal Technique contacted us about his interest to do a performance in Watsonville. Immortal Technique charged us absolutely nothing. Any proceeds would go into to the organization to help with our work. In return we put on a great event for the youth, charged minimally in order to recuperate cost of renting the location and paying for security and sound. Our goal was not to raise money but to raise the consciousness. I believe we were successful. Many organizations participated and lent their support.

In addition, Immortal Technique supports the struggle of the South Central Farmers who are currently losing their land to developers. On April 9th, Immortal Technique held a press conference at their location in order to help bring attention to the situation.

Since the founding of our organization, never has a well-known artist of his caliber volunteered to help our group (even though the calls have been made out to people like Franti, Boots, and Blackalicious), much less want to perform in a rural community like Watsonville. Immortal Technique helped bring attention to issues facing Watsonville and the Latino community. For that we honor and respect his revolutionary endeavors. We believe more artist need to practice what they sing or write about.

IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE .... INVASION TOUR .... 2006

The "Invasion Tour" begins on April 8th...

The following day a press conference will be held (April 9th) at the South Central Farm, and some actions taken in Los Angeles we will then move north to Central Cali and The Bay. Then South towards Diego, and East towards the battlegrounds of Arizona and New Mexico where the racist Minutemen cancer has grown rapidly and gained the support of even those whites that claim to be against the new world order. Then North, where we will attack Colorado and hopefully return not for a show or a party in the OC where Jim GilChrist is running. Rather we plan to havea series of actions that will become the strongest method of sending message to the blind racist that lives inside that movement.

The people of this nation that truly believe in democracy must be students of history as well and understand that the indigenous right to life supersedes corporate profit and the agenda of either America or Mexico's government. Both of which working under the guise of a democratic base conceive a methodology to keep their citizens at war while their capitalist foundation grows more totalitarian and corrupted by the passing day. This country has many topics immigration being one of them as a beautiful distraction. So let us solidify ourselves on this one, and move ahead to where the empire is consolidating its power. Military Industry, Prison Industry, Environmental Law changes, and of course the scientific mapping of the human genealogy that will give life a new price tag.

That said, the immigration issue is a complicated one, there is no one side because every side is multi dimensional. This creates the need for extended discussion starting with the acknowledging of basic human rights. For example, because I question and am critical of Israel's foreign policy doesn't mean and will never mean that I am Anti-Semitic. I believe in Israeli Jews having the right to exist and having a right to life and property, but just not at a costs to a Palestinians. We don't need to starve people to eat. Only a fascist regime would claim to be neutral to criticism and disallow the standards of international human rights law to be applicable to itself. If this is true for my opinions and the opinion of many, then how could it not hold true for the immigrant issue? I don't believe that every white person who is concerned with border security and with the flow of economic and political refugees from Central and South America is racist. There are people who have genuine concerns about their safety and their means of sustenance and I have come to understand that clearly.

Unfortunately, there is a very powerful racist element among the Minutemen and among whites who are opposed to any form of settlement. See the bottom is this, not even the most conservative Nazi militia in America is opposed to Mexican/Central American workers, farmers, practical slaves that do a job. The problem has ALWAYS been about us staying here. Or as I see it, returning to our homes that we have a right to more than any religion can claim Jerusalem. For we as an indigenous people have lived here on this side of the Earth well before the great grand parents of Abraham were even born.

We are good enough to slave and toil for America but when we ask that our rights be the same as citizens, that our labor treatment be the same as America's then it becomes an issue. We should "know our place" in the world is sentiment that they have, and truthfully have always had since the first illegal immigration crime wave of 1492 began. But the reality is this. That America is changing, the culture of America is changing. The world as we know it here in America will cease to exist soon and if we hold onto who we are as a people, hold onto our culture, our women, our children, our language, our strength in honor, respect and our faith...Then how could our spirit ever be broken. How can our soul which belongs to God and not us in the first place ever be taken. Revolucion just like our people, doesn't ask to born it is a force of nature that balances the oppression created by mankind himself.

And so I bring you. "The Invasion Tour" 2006

Immortal Technique is NOT a damn misogynist...that is the whole point. He talks about women the way many men do when the women react positively to "bitch give me some brain" and shit like that. Check out some of myspace sites out there which women/girls post up...all about a massive lack or absence of self respect. I feel Immortal Technique challenges women to really examine how they are viewed in this society and act with some SELF RESPECT. Of course, many of us have that empowerment but coming from one who works with many young women...they judge themselves by how much sexual attention they get from men or boys. They do not realize how insincere this attention is. Maybe if they hear it in a song they will get the strength and the knowledge to say..."HELL NO, that ain't cool with me." That is his message. I am a militant feminist and I feel this is a bold and important method to get some of our sistas to WAKE UP AND SEE THE MISOGYNY IN OTHERS.
by Mary
"Tech is NOT a MISOGYNIST, women are." what kind of logic is that?
by Teko
I think she means "Self-Hate."
by Mary
It’s always great to see people carrying on the tradition of blaming the victims for their own oppression. While you are at it, maybe you would like to suggest that it was “self-hate” that produced chattel slavery, and that queer people were the cause of AIDS?
by danielsan
This is an extremely important conversation: who we choose to represent us, who we choose to put on stage to teach our children, who we support financially within the movement, who we network with and link up our organizations with...

Immortal Technique is an amazing speaker and artist. Watch the videos posted here. Check out his website. Go see the Invasion tour.

Check out 'Revolutionary' volumes 1 & 2, as well. I imagine a lot of those kids who bounced to Technique and GIJoe left Youth & Power with a bad ass Tshirt and probably more than a few copies of those discs. As I said before, they contain some tracks that do us proud and teach our history to the youth, teach them the way to a different life and another worldview.

They also contain some horrible images, like giving your bitch a cesarian with a chainsaw, and yes incinerating degenerate fags. He's a battle-rhymer, as his bio from the post above states. So yes, he'll tell you that your crew is more full of fags than... and that he'll fuck your bitch hard and leave her used and degraded. He'll tell you whatever the crowd will react to in order to win the battle.

He'll say shit I wouldn't want those kids to think is revolutionary.

I appreciate this dialogue and think it should continue in our community, *respectfully* and thoughtfully. We often hold artists to a higher standard than our friends and family because they're 'on stage' and celebrity and have a different lifestyle somehow. Tech is a human just like you and I, with weaknesses and contradictions. We've all got 'em.

That said, "The Middle Passage," his highly anticipated third release, should come under close scrutiny and continued mysogyny, homophobia, and hypermacho bullshit should be taken into consideration as detracting from his effectiveness as a spokesman for la causa. I don't want to deny that it exists or dismiss people's serious reactions to hearing some of Tech's songs.

For the purposes of this discussion, however, Youth & Power was an amazing night, full of messages of unity in the struggle, hard work and sacrifice, and pride in our history and our peoples. It was a well coordinated and well attended event, featuring some amazing MCs and speakers, big names and smaller ones rocking the mic one after the other... respect to the Berets for putting it on and for building each year to bring more youth, more talent, more love, and more energy to the Youth & Power event.

Incidentally, I heard an unintentional advertisement for this year's Youth & Power on KSCO 1080 AM (the local right-wing talk radio station that broadcasts your usual 'kick out all the illegals who are overrunning our county' diatribes). They were talking about the event as an example of the Reconquista movement, using the title, "Invasion," as an example of the nerve of these Mexicans who refuse to submit and live their lives ashamed and exploited (like they should).
They have the audacity to rub it in our faces and call it an Invasion!!

Know your enemies, people. They're paying attention to what we do; we gotta keep tabs on them, too. Peace be with you (but be ready, just in case).
by Bobby James
I was there!!! It truly was a great success. Everyone I knew there was having a great time. The Warlordz/Ghambit didn't really fit in, but they were local and deserved to be there. I really enjoyed Para La Gente and I've always been a fan of Immortal Technique. Thank you for putting it all together.

"I appreciate this dialogue and think it should continue in our community, *respectfully* and thoughtfully."

how are IT's lyrics respectful and thoughtful when he talks about lynching and raping women and queers...

fuck respecting him. i have no respect for people that shit out their mouth and confuse revolutionary ideas with hateful opressive shit.

and MOVE. dont let me get started on them... Ramona Africa came and spoke in my town and told a predominently queer audience that there were certainly no queers in MOVE and that they didnt allow for that. queers were the product of "industry" she said... hmmmmm.... im supposed to respect that...?! what the fuck?

these people should know better...

ps. this conversation happened on infoshop.org as well and the same comments were made. apperently anti-racism is hip these days and anti-heterosexism is just too hot to touch.

by TEKOLOTE!
Ramona Africa was the sole survivor of the 11 people killed by a police C4 bomb on May 13, 1985. She was then charged for conspiracy and served 7 years behind enemy lines. She never relented on her revolutionary commitment and has steadfastly supported the efforts to free Mumia Abu Jamal. Then you have the audacity to vehemently criticize people who are involved in the amelioration of communities of color. How arrogant and stupid of you! This is exactly why the so-called left can't get their shit together! Every one of you elitist pontificators believes that your political view is the only correct one. The only way to build better communities is to teach with tolerance and patience. Not every is at the same political level. A few years ago I would have been robbing your lunch money fool! Now my community comes first. I urge you that instead of talking your elitist crap, get out on the streets and put in some real work.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
