California Residents: Help Protect Captive Elephants!

by PeTA

Captive Elephants Need Your Help Now!

The California Elephant Protection Act (AB 3027), sponsored by Assemblymember Lloyd Levine, will make it a misdemeanor to use or possess bullhooks or chains near an elephant. This bill will also set minimum space requirements for elephants in circuses and zoos. Elephants are highly intelligent, social animals who live in extended family groups and mirror humans in terms of emotion, age progression, longevity, and social bonds. AB 3027 will set minimum standards of care and excellence for elephant handling for the rest of the nation to follow. For more information about the egregious training methods employed by elephant handlers as well as animal welfare concerns facing elephants, see Circuses.com and SaveWildElephants.com.

Please contact your state assemblymember today and urge him or her to support AB 3027. If you do not know the name of your assemblymember, click here, enter your zip code, and click on “search.” Or you can call the Government Information Hotline at 916-322-9900 and give the operator your address—the operator will then tell you the name of your assemblymember, and you can leave your message for him or her through the operator. Please address your letters to:

The Honorable [Full Name of Assemblymember]
State Capitol
P.O. Box 942849
Sacramento, CA 94249

This bill will be heard by the Assembly Public Safety Committee on April 18 or 25. Stay tuned for more details about the hearing. Please urge members of the committee (listed below) to support AB 3027. Note: If your assemblymember is on the committee, contacting him or her is even more important, as it could sway his or her vote for this bill.
