YUCA will be presenting DTSC 1,800 signatures opposing Romic's permit. Since
1994, community residents have waged a campaign to shut down Romic in East
Palo Alto. We want to get Romic out of East Palo Alto because people should
not have to suffer for Romic‚'s and DTSC's carelessness. In the spirit of
Earth Month, residents say that we have the right to live in a toxic free
city.

Romic is an unsafe hazardous waste recycling facility that has been
contaminating East Palo Alto since 1964 and has not had a proper operating
permit for the past 14 years. Romic has had constant violations that have
put the life of East Palo Alto residents at risk. It has taken this facility
10 years to release their Environmental Impact Report and when it was
finally released in May 2005, it was inadequately written. It stated that
the impacts on the community would be less than significant.

DTSC (Department of Toxic Substances Control) has also contributed to East
Palo Alto's bad health because it has violated the community's trust by not
addressing our community's concerns. DTSC failed to inform the community as
a whole that they were engaging in settlement negotiations with Romic. DTSC
fails to protect the community by allowing non-compliant companies to
operate without any real penalties that do not significantly impact the
companies.

The City of East Palo Alto and its residents have carried the burden of San
Mateo County for many years. Pollutants coming from thousands of constant
commuting cars, land and water contamination, and Romic have led to many
cancer and asthma cases.

East Palo Alto will be heard!!!
