How Americans’ growing appetite for sushi is helping to support Rev. Sun Myung Moon

by reposts
On a mission from their leader, five young men arrived in Chicago to open a little fish shop on Elston Avenue. Back then, in 1980, people of their faith were castigated as "Moonies" and called cult members. Yet the Japanese and American friends worked grueling hours and slept in a communal apartment as they slowly built the foundation of a commercial empire.
They were led by the vision of Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the self-proclaimed messiah who sustained their spirits as they played their part in fulfilling the global business plan he had devised.

Moon founded his controversial Unification Church six decades ago with the proclamation that he was asked by Jesus to save humanity. But he also built the empire blending his conservative politics, savvy capitalism and flair for spectacles such as mass weddings in Madison Square Garden.

From The Moonies in the early 1980s:

That means that we will try to eat foods without so much cooking, which means we will eat more raw foods, raw vegetables, raw fish. Anyway, it's good for their health, so people will turn to it. For a while, mankind may try to escape to space and live up there, but the difficulties and expenses will be too much and he will come right back to earth. Then, man will have to turn to the ocean. It is only a matter of time. The future of the ocean is inevitable. Is fish good for the diet? Ten or twenty years ago, Americans never even dreamed about eating anything raw, much less fish. Now they are going to Japanese restaurants and trying out the sushi and sashimi. If fish is going to be the main source of the human diet, what kind of fish would be the best to supply it? We have to produce a large fish and utilize all its qualities. What kind of fish should we use? Whales? Tunas? And what else? Shark! Actually, whales are not good to use for feeding lots of people. They are too large. They only give birth to one calf per cow and it takes a long time for them to gestate.

Let's look at the tuna and the shark. They contain the tastiest kind of meat. That's true! You may not have tasted it, but I have tasted many kinds of shark in different ways. Shark is good for dry meat. It doesn't have so much fat. On the other hand, tuna has lots of oil content in the meat. So, these two kinds of fish are the best for providing a wide variety of fish taste to humans.

Megalomania Meets Maki

Overfishing. Mercury. Enslaved fishermen. There are enough ideological pitfalls to sushi consumption already. So when we read Martin's post earlier today, it made us sad. We just want some eel and spicy tuna rolls; not to support a crazy cultleader's bid for world domination via the seafood market. Judging from the comments on the original post, many of you feel the same way.

So DCist Nicole and I made a quick phone survey of some local sushi restaurants and asked which of them bought their supplies from the good reverend's True World Group supply company. Our harried, informal, and unconfirmed results:

* Cafe Asia used to buy from TWG, but no longer do so. They declined to explain why they made the switch.

* Tono Sushi does indeed roll Unification Church Uramaki — they say their experience with TWG has been "pretty good," and that they stick with them because of the quality of service, not because Moon's dreams of sushi monopoly have come to fruition. They also said they had "no idea" about the company's ties to the church.

* Spices also uses TWG, but only rarely; they tell us that most of their fish comes from New York. They said they only turn to TWG when they have to fill a special request or need a particularly quick turnaround on an order.

* Sushi Ko also uses TWG, and says their experiences have been positive.

* The same goes for Kaz Sushi Bistro.

We tried a few other DC sushi purveyors as well, but we either didn't get an answer or couldn't find someone who knew whether their restaurant used True World Group as a supplier. If you get a chance to ask about TWG the next time you visit your favorite sushi outlet, consider taking a moment to record what you find out in the comments to this post.

Ten kinds of crazy going on in this Chicago Tribune piece about Reverend Sun Myung Moon and his, uh, stranglehold on the sushi industry. Yeah, we didn’t know that one either. So, as the tipster who brought this piece to our attention noted, every California roll you eat helps subsidize the quality, money-losing journalism of the Washington Times. And who knew cornering an industry could sound so simple?

“I have the entire system worked out, starting with boat building,” Moon said in “The Way of Tuna,” a speech given in 1980. “After we build the boats, we catch the fish and process them for the market, and then have a distribution network. This is not just on the drawing board; I have already done it.”

In the same speech, he called himself “king of the ocean.”

Oh man. “The Way of Tuna.” “King of the ocean.” Just, wow. We’re really glad no one pays attention to this nutcase.

But, as a rival Chicago fishmonger points out, “It’s kind of tough to compete in this industry with a company that is so global, has a major presence in almost every market and that is driven by religious fervor.” Except in media, where, surprisingly, it helps to not be clearly batshit insane. Most of the time, anyway.

Now I don't have to feel like the bland, unadventurous eater I am when I decline sushi -- which I've never liked. I can feel like a socially-conscious diner -- one who brings his sensibilities to the table along with his appetite.

I don't care to take the chance of supporting Moon and his endeavors and proclamations.

In its heyday, Moon's Unification Church was famous for separating adherents from their families and promoting mass arranged marriages -- giving rise to frequent labeling of the group as a cult.

Moon believes himself to be "God's ambassador, sent to Earth with his full authority." At a ceremony in Washington in 2004 he said he's been in communication with the spirits of Hitler, Stalin, Marx, Lenin and "the founders of five great religions," and that these men and other notables have unanimously "declared to all heaven and Earth that Rev. Sun Myung Moon is none other than humanity's savior, messiah, returning lord and true parent."

He has compared gay people to dung-eating dogs, and in a March 2, 2003 sermon told Jews, "You have to repent. Jesus was the King of Israel. Through the principle of indemnity, Hitler killed 6 million Jews... God could not prevent Satan from doing that because Israel killed the True Parents. Even now, you have to determine that you will repent and follow and become one with Christianity through Rev. Moon."
