EARTH DAY GRAND OPENING AND OPEN HOUSE AT RECYCLING FACILITY

The City of Santa Cruz invites everyone to the Grand Opening of their new Single-Stream
Recycling Facility on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The new recycling facility is
a part of the City Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) at 605 Dimeo Lane, three miles north of the city
limits off Highway 1.

The Earth Day open house celebration at the RRF will kick off at 10 a.m. with a brief program and
“ribbon cutting” by Mayor Cynthia Mathews. Afterwards, attendees will be able to walk through the new Single-Stream Facility, which sorts mixed paper and containers for processing and resale. Guided tours of the Public Tipping Area, landfill operation, greenwaste area and Gas-to-Energy Plant will be offered between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are recommended for those who want to take the tours. Refreshments will be provided. There will be a free drawing for a home compost bin. Displays, videos and information on recycling will be featured at the event.

Also on display at the RRF is a public art piece developed by the UCSC Public Art class, entitled
“Land-Fill.” UCSC students, working under Professor Dee Hibbert-Jones, designed and built the unique and colorful piece from recycled materials to celebrate Earth Day and this event.
The RRF will be open to the public as usual on April 22 for self-haul disposal and recycling. Free
mulch (you haul) will be available at the Greenwaste Drop-off area. City residents attending the Grand Opening can drop-off household batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and “e-wastes” such as televisions, computer monitors and VCRs, at the Public Tipping Area. All County residents can use the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Center, which is open every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., to safely dispose of more toxic wastes, such as pesticides, paints, solvents and chemical cleaners.

For more information about the event, contact Mary Arman, Public Works Operations Manager, at
420-5162. For more information on the RRF, recycling, or safe HHW disposal in the City of Santa Cruz, check out the City website: http://www.ci.santa-cruz.ca.us
