Fight Over Doctors Ensues Between Chinese Community and Major Medical Group
SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco’s Chinese doctors are being aggressively courted by a major health group, upsetting the small Chinese doctors group in Chinatown that serves a mostly Chinese population.
The city's largest doctor's group, Brown & Toland Medical Group, is promising hefty packages to doctors in the Chinese Community Health Care Association, a small doctor's group that serves the Chinese community, if they sign on with them.
"This means that patients who are monolingual or new immigrants who are economically disadvantaged will have a harder time seeing a culturally sensitive doctor who can communicate with them in their mother tongue," said Dr. Shu-Wing Chan, a member on the Board of Trustee of the Chinese Community Health Care Association.
The Chinese Community Health Care Association is a small association of about 160 bilingual physicians who are associated with the Chinese Hospital and other hospitals in the city. Physicians in the Chinese Community Health Care Association can also belong to other physicians' groups such as Brown & Toland, which has more than 1500 physicians in its network.
