Stewart Alexander Speaks On Immigration

The immigration debates have been politically timed, not to establish policy that will benefit America in dealing with a complex matter, but only to influence the votes for the 2006 elections.

Within recent weeks the debate over immigration laws in Washington D.C. has dominated the news and has sparked mass demonstrations throughout America; but immigration debates have been politically timed to influence the 2006 elections.

It appears that Republican, right-wing extremist, first laid their trap for the Democrats on the hot issue of immigration, and then the Democrats laid their trap to label immigrants as “felons.”

The issues involving immigration are very complex and need time to analyze to reach comprehensive, long term, solution for the good of America and our neighbors. Immigration should not be used as a political battle field to garner votes during this 2006 election year.

The leaders in our nation’s capital have their priorities all wrong; congress needs to act with the same urgency to end the war in Iraq. Congress needs to act now to control the price of gasoline.

The United States has lost almost 2400 soldiers in the Iraq war, and no meaningful talks to end the war are happening in Washington. Thousands of Iraq civilians are being slain in the streets and cities of Iraq and this Democratic Republican body is debating an issue that demonstrates their failure as leaders.

The problems associated with immigration will be with us for years to come, and for the Republicans, it was an easy one to pull out of the hat.

America needs time to deal with the matters of immigration. We have run out of time to deal with the Iraq war. We have run out of time on the rising cost of fuel.

Recently I was in Temecula, California, near the wine country; and I observed a white male, perhaps in his early forties, pulled his late model F-250 Ford pickup off to the shoulder of the road, and there he picked up two day laborers, and for a moment I don’t think he had a problem with immigration. However during this election year Washington is telling us this is the issue of the day.

Instead of Washington directing our thinking, Americans need to reshape their thinking. End the war now, control gasoline prices now, control deficit spending, and establish tough guidelines for fair trade. We should not rush legislation on immigration that will be costly to Americans, resulting in failed policy, and damage our relationship with our neighbors.
