Admitting you have a problem is always the first step in breaking an addiction. Luckily, President Bush has taken that first step by admitting to the nation that America is addicted to oil. Unfortunately, admitting the problem isn’t enough. Our country consumes 25 percent of the world’s total oil production for only 5 percent of the world’s population.
America's oil addiction has implications for US national security, wars for foreign oil, air quality and health, global warming, public safety, family income, and economic stability. Additionally, our nation’s oil exploration, drilling, pipelines, transportation and refining almost invariably lead to human rights violations. Yet, Bush and scores of other politicians and corporate CEOs exhibit the classic signs of an addict: denial, aggression, avoidance, and shifting the blame. It’s time to address our addiction and take steps to break it.
Help us break our oil addiction on April 1st by joining this year’s Fossil Fools Day, and make it the largest and most successful international day of action against dirty energy so far.
Join us for the Oil Addicts Anonymous Meeting to discuss the chain of oil impacts, to learn from one another about individual steps we can take to end our addiction to oil and to address different strategies we can take with some of the biggest oil polluters in the industry. There will be speakers from human rights groups to climate change and refreshments will be served.
When: Saturday, April 1st—Fossil Fools Day
Where: First Congregational Church
2501 Harrison St @ 27th St.
Oakland, CA 94610
Time: 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
