San Francisco Teachers Vote to Authorize Strike

by High School Student
Teacher Voted Overwhelming to Strike
The teachers union in San Francisco voted Wednesday night to authorize a strike if their demands for pay raise are not met.

66% was needed to approve the authorization. An overwhelming 87% -- over 2200 -- of the members present voted to ok the strike.

United Educators of San Francisco, the union representing 6000 teachers in San Francisco's public schools, demanded a 10% increase in wages, as they have not had a cost of living increase in four years. The district would agree to nothing higher than 7.5%.

Teachers will likely not start striking until mid-April. The district has prepared temperary teachers to fill in during the strike.
