Masked rebels built barricades in the streets and threw paint and fire bombs at riot police today outside of Chilean universities in the cities of Santiago, Concepción and Iquique, on the "Day of the Young Combatant".
On March 29th of 1985, the Vergara brothers, Eduardo and Rafael of the Left Revolutionary Movement (MIR), were killed in a confrontation with police officers.
The day is also commemorates other young rebels killed by the police in Chile, such as the indigenous Mapuche youth Alex Lemún Saavedra and the young anarchist woman Claudia López Benaiges.
