March For Peace in Fresno
By Mike Rhodes

Today (Friday, March 24) the March for Peace, led by Fernando Suarez del Solar and Pablo Paredes, came to Fresno. Joined by activists from Peace Fresno, a delegation from the National Action Network, students at Pacific University and a contingent of Latino youth activists from the area, the March for Peace went from one end of town to the other today.

The March for Peace is mobilizing communities throughout California in opposition to the war in Iraq. The march is bringing together Peace activists, workers, students, unionists, Raza, African-Americans and particularly, youth who are being targeted by military recruiters.

In Fresno there were several stops as marchers delivered a formal “Constituent Request” to the offices of Senators Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein and local Congressional Representatives Jim Costa and George Radanovich.

The content of the letter to elected officials follows:

On the behalf of individual constituents and organizations of this community which you represent, we request the following:

1. Describe your position in relation to the war presently being waged in Iraq.

2. If you support the current administration's plans for the war, provide a detailed description of these plans. Include how they propose to end the war and their timetable for the withdrawal of troops. Include any information from the Defense Department or other pertinent departments. Also, describe any plans for the continued participation of our National Guard in this war now, and through the end of the conflict.

3. If you don't support the current administration's plans for the war, describe any efforts, legislative or otherwise which you plan or are undertaking to bring about the withdrawal of our soldiers from the field of combat and their removal from any theater of operations or support for the war. Describe any separate steps or efforts to extricate our National Guard members.

4. Please provide this information within 30 days.
