Alleluia Panis Dance Theater and Magui Moro Master Artists In Concert: A rare double feature

DESCRIPTION: Kularts' SPRING FORWARD! a red hot showcase of Filipino performance, presents a spellbinding dance theatre experience of ancient Pilipino rituals and tribal arts featuring Alleluia Panis Dance Theater and Magui Moro Master Artists.

APDT performs a new project called The Mutya Project. Mutya, a Filipino word, is the essence of creative power, a female energy, a sacred & powerful magic, and the artist's muse & inspiration. The Mutya Project explores rituals and spiritual practices like ecstatic dance as it relates to the circle of life.

Director Alleluia Panis' vision is to create dance/theater works that define the artistic identity of the American Pilipino people. Ms. Panis has received commissioning awards from the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, New Langton Arts, and Brava! for Women in the Arts. She received the Choreographic Fellowship from the California Arts Council. She is an American Pilipino choreographer in the forefront of contemporary American dance theater informed by issues and concerns of American Pilipinos.

Additionally, we have a rare, tribal music and dance concert by Magui Moro Master Artists, Islamic natives from the Southern Philippines known for their ancient cultural practices in gong music, compelling rituals, and intricate textiles. In vividly colorful traditional regalia, the Magui Moro Master Artists perform songs inspired by typhoon rains and the sound of crashing waves on the kulintang (knobbed gongs), demonstrate expertise in interlocking rhythms on the agung (bass gongs), dance with warrior leaps and mock attacks, and sing gripping incantations of ancient verses.
