Midwest Immigrants and Allies Pour into Chicago Against HR4437
On Friday, March 10, 2006, downtown Chicago saw a pro-immigrant march estimated at tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of people, all rousing opposition against the infamous anti-immigrant Sensenbrenner Bill. Protesters carried hand-lettered signs saying "No Human Being is Illegal," "George Washington Was An Immigrant," "We are America," "My Mexican immigrant son died in Iraq," "I'm a dishwasher-not a criminal," and "Don't deport my parents." The protest drew comparisons with scales near the largest protests Chicago has ever seen — including one protest in 1886 where 80,000 immigrants marched down State Street demanding an eight-hour workday. Locally, a rally and march against HR4437 is planned in Santa Cruz on Friday, March 17. The rally will start at 5pm at the SC County Building, before leaving at 6pm to march to the Barrio Beach Flats Community Center.
HR 4437 would make it a felony offense to be in the U.S. without proper documentation. This would push undocumented immigrants further underground, and increase the potential for exploitation by employers. This bill would also criminalize nurses, teachers, clergy, social workers, and anyone else who aids, assists, or otherwise has regular contact with undocumented immigrants.
