Samoans and Educational Issues in our San Francisco Unified School District

by Francisco Da Costa (frandacosta [at] att.net)
Pacific Islanders and among them Samoans have got been able to get the benefits that the San Francisco Unified School District offers to so many students and from so many other ethnic groups.Samoans serve our Nation and many have died for this Nation all over the world. Right now many have laid their lives down in Iraq. Samoans and Pacific Islanders pay taxes and should share in the benefits offered to all students in San Francisco. Again and again we notice that false statistics prevent Samoan students from getting what is really due them.

Samoans and other Pacific Islanders are lumped with other Asians and true representation is difficult to find in the false statistics that I have reviewed again and again over the past years.

It is simply wrong to find that 3 Samoans or Pacific Islanders attend a particular school - when it fact over 50 do. Something has to be done to get the real representation and we should not blame the students - these stats must be corrected on a war footing.

When Samoans and other Pacific Islanders serve our Nation and many of them die for our Nation - this fact is not known to the world.

Samoans and other Pacific Islanders pay taxes and should at least get what is due them by agencies and the San Francisco Unified School District having a proper count of Samoans and Pacific Islanders in general in our schools.

This is critical especially when credits can be given to the Samoan students when it comes to Cultural Courses - such as dances, singing, and other performances that reveal the rich tradition of the Pacific Islanders.

Again and again for the longest time ever Pacific Islanders have not been given opportunities due them and under the general title of Asians - money due to the Pacific Islanders is spent by others - this must stop.
