"WALK FOR A DREAM MARCH" March

by Julita Rincon (julirincon [at] gmail.com)
March for a DREAM is a march organized by JIFM (Jovenes Inmigrantes Por Un Futuro Mehor/ Young Immigrant For A Better Future) Each year thousand of students are graduating from high schools and now colleges and unable to work in the United States. Why? The answer is because of their status. The DREAM Act, a piece of legislation addresses this issue and if passed thousands of students across the United States would be able to have greater access to higer education and a life of basics needs such as an identification or driver's license that is currently denied to them. This is why Saturday March 25th we "Walk for a DREAM" Come and walk our way to UHD (One Main ST) We will start in Harry and Chestnut. Close to Davis High School (1101 Quitman) Be there at 11 AM.
Fellow coogs, activists, community and educators,

Jóvenes Inmigrantes Por Un Futuro Mejor (JIFM) - Young Immigrants For a Better at the University of Houston is a student driven organization that advocates for the rights of immigrant students. JIFM focuses on the passage of the DREAM (Developmental Relief and Education for Alien Minors) Act- http://www.nclr.org/content/policy/detail/1331/ a piece of legislation that would grant undocumented students the right to continue their professional careers once they graduate from college.

It is a time when it has become crucial to unite as a community of concerned individuals that fight for immigrant rights- human rights. The DREAM Act is a very important legislation that if passed would have a tremendous positive impact on the lives of thousands of students across the United States. It is important to mention that this is an education issue that is keeping many students across the nation from accomplishing dreams and educational goals.

Currently, we, the students have no opportunities to pursue our professional careers once we graduate from college because we are considered to be "illegal". The DREAM Act would change this allowing a major group of bright and hard-working students to become temporary residents and eventually legal residents.

JIFM believes that with your collaboration a march can be accomplished by letting know our immigrant and non-immigrant community that is imperative to raise the voice for human rights. It is a lesson that has been learned over and over again that “ la union hace la fuerza." We need to gather together and campaign with a common strength.

The march: WALK FOR A DREAM" is taking place Saturday, March 25th. JIFM is starting the march in Davis High School and continuing down to the University of Houston-Downtown where a rally will take place. (Please see attached flyer). The symbolism behind the march is that in which a student is allowed to walk through a public education and further continue to college, but is then obstructed from continuing a professional career because of the students' status. JIFM believes that with your support this march can become a capstone in making the DREAM Act become a reality and a resolution that needs a quick resolution to become a priority in the agenda of congressman.

Your support is greatly needed. JIFM asks that you inform your fellow classmates, students and colleagues about this event taking place Saturday, March 25th. It is important to have the youth and educational system involved in this process. Come and "Walk for a DREAM."
