Migrations / Migraciones is the life’s work of Gloria Gervitz, who is recognized as one of the most important Mexican poets alive today. Lushly erotic in the poetic traditions of both the 17th-century Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz as well as modern Mexican feminism, Gervitz’s writing is a complex interweaving of personal and family memory. Gerwitz’s work, reflecting her place within Mexico’s displaced Eastern European Jewish community, tells stories that are profoundly Mexican as well as American, and that are ultimately about resolution. Mark Schafer has given us an English translation that has taken thirteen years to complete. His thoughtful conversation with Gervitz follows the poem. This event is co-sponsored by the Mexican Consulate in San Francisco.
