Spiral Gardens Produce Stand Cashbox Stolen

by Ela Harrison (ela [at] spiralgardens.org)
Spiral Gardens' Produce Stand cashbox stolen during the Mardi Gras parade's visit.
At Spiral Gardens Community Food Security Project
(http://www.spiralgardens.org) we run a weekly produce
stand (Tuesday afternoons) selling farm fresh high
quality produce at cost, providing affordable fruits
and vegetables to a neighborhood that really needs
them. Many local residents rely on us for this.

Last night the Mardi Gras Parade arrived at the
Garden, on the corner of Oregon and Sacramento Streets
around 6pm, just as the produce stand was closing up.
In the confusion of the influx of people, the cashbox
containing the day's takings was stolen.

While I obviously regret the moment of inattention
that enabled the theft to take place, I am also deeply
saddened that someone should take advantage of a
community celebration like the Mardi Gras Parade to
steal from a community-supporting institution like the
produce stand. We do not make any money: I work the
stand every week rain or shine as a volunteer. All the
money we take goes to buying the produce for the next
week.

At this stage it's not clear where we're going to get
the money from to buy the produce for next week - but
we are determined to continue.
