Israeli strike kills Islamic Jihad leader

by ALJ
A leader of the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad has been killed in an Israeli air strike on a car in Gaza City.
Khalid al-Dahduh, also known as Abu al-Walid, was killed on Wednesday when the vehicle in which he was travelling exploded in the strike.

He was the leader of the Al-Quds Brigades in the Gaza Strip.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

Islamic Jihad, which boycotted a Palestinian general election last January in which its larger rival Hamas won a massive victory, has been behind the last six bombings in Israel.

Al-Dahduh's death brings to 4969 the number of people killed since the outbreak of the Palestinian uprising in 2000. Most of the victims have been Palestinian.

A senior Islamic Jihad commander was killed in a car explosion in Gaza on Wednesday.

Palestinian sources said the Israel Air Force was responsible for blowing up the car, but the IDF denied involvement in the explosion.

Police identified the targeted Jihad man as Khaled Dahdouh, 39, a senior commander of the group's armed wing.

Israel Radio reported, that the Israeli military denied attacking Gaza today and claimed they are not responsible for the Jihad man's death.

The car, which blew up as it traveled over a speed bump, was incinerated. Hospital officials said two other people were wounded.

The explosion took place on a busy street in the residential area between
Islamic University and the Finance Ministry compound in Gaza City. It knocked out electricity in the area and damaged several cars parked nearby.

Abu Dajana, a spokesman for Islamic Jihad's military wing, vowed revenge.

"Our retaliation and our reprisal will reach into the depths of the Zionist entity," Abu Dajana said. "The Zionists will swallow the same bitter drink that each Palestinian family has drunk from."

Samira Daoud, 32, an eye-witness reported, "The explosion shattered all the windows of my apartment and some of the flying shrapnel from the windows hit me in the face," Daoud said. "I ran to the street to see if my children were there, and I saw a man lying outside of the car with a big white beard, and he was bleeding."

The incident took place hours after Palestinians fired a Qassam rocket towards the coastal town of Ashkelon. Islamic Jihad frequently launches rockets from Gaza into Israel.

Israel has vowed to crack down on Islamic Jihad, which carried out two recent suicide bombings in Israel.

The Islamic Jihad has staunchly opposed all Palestinian efforts at maintaining a partial cease-fire in attacks against Israelis.

Israeli security forces have killed several of its senior commanders in
the West Bank.

A top Palestinian militant has been killed in an explosion in Gaza and an Israeli settler was shot dead in the West Bank in a fresh wave of bloodshed.

Khaled al-Dahdouh, a commander of Islamic Jihad's armed wing, was driving through Gaza City when his car blew up.

Islamic Jihad has blamed Israel for the killing, but Israeli officials have denied involvement.

The settler was working at a petrol station in the northern West Bank when he was shot by gunmen.

Islamic Jihad's radio station said Mr Dahdouh, 45, commanded the al-Quds Brigades in Gaza and described him as the movement's top military figure there.

Witnesses said his car exploded moments pulling away from the kerb near the Islamic University of Gaza in the centre of Gaza City.
