Once again a branch of the Government has declared itself above the law and set its own course, this time on San Francisco Bay. On Wednesday, workers will protest the National Parks Service’s (NPS) illegal and union busting bidding process for their controversial new contract for the Alcatraz Ferry service with anti-union Hornblower Yachts, Inc. The Service Contract Act (SCA) of 1965 is a federal law that requires contractors that provide services to the government to pay prevailing wages and benefits, or what the previous contractor paid. Ignoring the law, the NPS awarded the contract to Hornblower, a non-union company.

The NPS has argued that the law doesn’t apply to them. On January 6, 2006, the Department of Labor issued a preliminary determination that the law does apply to them and the Alcatraz Ferry Contract, and asked for a response within 21 days if they disagreed. To date no response has been received.

Wednesday’s rally will be one of the largest events in the IBU and MM&P’s recent history. Join the Alcatraz Ferry workers, ILWU Drill team and members of Locals 10, 34, 6, Teamsters, SUP and the SF Labor Council to show your support.

I'm sick of all these attacks on workers. It's past time to stop this bulls--t.

They don't even have enough boats to withstand the abuse that daily runs will take on their boats. Enroute back to San Francisco on the Vallejo ferry, we discussed this with one of the pilots. Hornblower doesn't have the number of boats, and they don't even have the kind of boats to withstand the hard duty of the run. Docked at Alcatraz they are hit by hard tides. They have fiberglass hulls. Things happen when you dock a boat or run a boat on these heavily used runs. Take a look at the dents the next time you ride any heavily used steel ferry boat. Think a Hornblower fiberglass yacht could stand up to it? I'd recommend you wear a lifejacket.
