Gun Trauma -- Getting Shot Has Changed My Life

by YO! Youth Outlook Multimedia
In some neighborhoods getting shot is more common than getting into a fights. Young Napz, 14, is a writer for YO! Youth Outlook Multimedia a project of New America Media.
OAKLAND, Calif.--When I walked out of my house on Jan. 19 of this year, I had a feeling something bad was going to happen. I had been having nightmares of getting shot and dying ever since one of my friends was killed recently, but I never thought I would get shot.

My plan was for me to go to school and look for an internship. After that I was going to my friend's house to pick up some CDs. Then I was going to go look for a job in my old neighborhood. I ended up hanging out on Fruitvale Avenue with five of my friends, in front of my friend's clothing store. It was around 4 p.m. when I got there.

I was talking to a friend of mine in his car when I saw Kre8tor, another friend, throwing up some signs to a car. I got out of the car and saw an Asian dude throwing up signs -- using his hands to represent his turf -- and laughing. I thought Kre8tor knew him, so I walked away. All of a sudden, my eyes went blurry and I shook a little. I didn't feel hurt so I kept on walking. At first, I thought it was hit by a paintball gun, or something. As I went to the store, my friend was like: "Napz! You bleeding!"

After that, the owner of the store asked me what happened. I said: "I don't know. I think I got shot. F--k!" Then I fell to the floor. Later, 5-0 (the police) and an ambulance came and checked me out. I don't know how 5-0 didn't arrest anybody. The people that shot me were right around the corner hella deep the whole time.
