The time for a strong anti-death penalty movement is more crucial than ever before. The recent victory in Michael Morales' case demonstrates how important anti-death penalty activism is and will become. Without the mass mobilization around Stan Tookie Williams' case, the injustices of the death penalty such as its racism, targeting of the poor, not being a deterrent of crime, condemning innocent to die, and now more than ever as a cruel and unusual punishment has been illuminated for all to see.

We cannot let this light go out! Stan Williams and Clarence Ray Allen's deaths were tragic to the movement, but we can now see that without the activism around their cases this victory would have never been possible. Anti-death penalty activism may seem small in the mainstream, however, anti-death penalty consciousness is mainstream which is why the anesthesiologists had the confidence to not participate in the execution; they knew they had the support.

Yet, the fight is not over, it is just beginning. And this is why we must continue to pull the anti-death penalty conscious into anti-death penalty movement work so we can continue to fight the injustices of the death penalty and ultimately end the death penalty system.
