Planned Parenthood Vows to Fight Ban in Court

NEW YORK — Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Planned Parenthood Minnesota North Dakota South Dakota (PPMNS) denounced the South Dakota Senate's vote to ban abortion today. PPFA and PPMNS announced they will fight the ban in court to protect Planned Parenthood patients.

PPFA Senior Staff Attorney Eve Gartner issued the following statement on the ban:

"This ban is an attack on women's fundamental right of privacy and their ability to make the most intimate and personal choice about when and whether to have a child. The U.S. Supreme Court has reaffirmed time and again the constitutional right to make the private choice to have an abortion. South Dakota is entering dangerous territory with this ban.

"Across the country, state politicians are creating a gauntlet of anti-choice laws and regulations to make it more difficult for women to get the best and safest reproductive health care services. South Dakota's ban is the most sweeping abortion ban passed by any state in more than a decade. Planned Parenthood will go to court to ensure women, with their doctors and families, continue to be able to make personal health care decisions — not politicians."

NARAL Pro-Choice America Urges Gov. Rounds to Veto Abortion Ban
South Dakota Legislature Passes Criminal Ban on Abortion

Washington, DC - Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America, the nation’s leading advocate for personal privacy and a woman’s right to choose, called the passage by both houses of South Dakota’s legislature of a criminal ban on abortion throughout pregnancy a monumental setback for women.

“The actions of the South Dakota legislature are a chilling reminder of the lengths to which anti-choice lawmakers will go to interfere in our most difficult and personal decisions,” said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “This bill contains an inadequate exception to protect a woman’s life and no other exceptions - not for rape, not for incest, not even to protect the woman’s health. Clearly emboldened by President Bush’s judicial appointments, South Dakota has passed dangerous and unconstitutional legislation that its supporters admit is a direct attack on Roe v. Wade. Rather than continuing these unconstitutional assaults that threaten to endanger women’s lives and imprison doctors, these legislators should commit to enacting commonsense legislation to prevent unintended pregnancy.”

With today’s vote, the total abortion ban (HB 1215) has passed both houses of the South Dakota legislature and now goes to anti-choice Gov. Mike Rounds, possibly as early as this week. Gov. Rounds, who has not indicated whether he will sign the bill, has said that, “[a]bortion . . . should always be illegal.”

Keenan continued, “South Dakotans who cherish the fundamental American values of freedom and personal responsibility must call on Gov. Rounds to veto this egregious legislation. We should work to reduce the need for abortion, not continue to battle about Roe v. Wade. ”

Any move which stops the violence of abortion is to be welcomed. Abortion is a degrading act. It is not a feminist issue. Abortion, war, capital punishmen, poverty, WMD and all violence need to be opposed.
by moral equivilent
All children need to come into this world loved, wanted, and with parents who are in a position to care for them. Family planning is not violence- it may actually prevent violence.

We need more options- not less of them. We need to organize and counter the evil that has been done to our sisters in South Dakota.

Dear Pro Life: Well at least you're consistent as you erase the pregnant woman and her body from your equation. No wonder you can make the stupid statement that abortion is "not a feminist issue."

What would you do: imprison her during the pregnancy, then strap her down until the baby is extracted? Sounds like violence to me--and an absolute nightmare for the woman.

I'm sick of so-called "pro-life" men yelping about the lives of precious fetuses and having the audacity of telling women they must have babies they dont want. This decision belongs to the woman who is dealing with the pregnancy-NO ONE ELSE.

How would MEN like it if the govt outlawed vasectomies and condoms and forced them to adopt and raise the children that resulted when they got women pregnant?

Men dont get pregnant so SHUT UP about abortion and get a vasectomy. Men who dont use condoms or get vasectomies cause fetuses. Men are the main cause of abortion.

They want the power of life and death like arrogant tin gods.

They want to forbid the mother from ending the life of a fetus—so they can kill the ex fetus at age 18 when its old enough to be a soldier in the wars started by MEN - who march around in circles, dress alike and kill each other-and women and childrren- (ex-fetuses).

War also "stops a beating heart" Get a clue.

Men caused overpopulation, famine and ecocide by forbiding most of the worlds women to use abortion and birth conrol. They bred women like animals in a factory farm.

Now we have a human surplus-billions of children who would not have been born if men didnt interfere with a womans right to decide if and when to have children. Birth control prevents abortion! Get a brain!!!
by Life is precious
If a couple choose to engage in sex, then there are possible consequences that need to be accepted. An unborn child should not be aborted because its parents do not want it. Do we kill abandoned children because they are unwanted. The link between abortion and infanticide is strong. What of late term abortion where the baby is prettty much born then killed? Horrific. How can this be promoted by those who claim to care about justice. Abortion degrades women and life. Just like other acts of violence it has no place in a just society. Early feminists opposed it.
by to "precious"
then you want to deny access even in the early stages of pregnancy to the point where it actually reaches the 3rd trimester.

Abortion is not infanticide. However, denial of abortion in certain circumstances (Darfur, etc.) is equivalent to genocide. Rape is used as a tool to destroy a generation.

As for abandoned children, tell us when there aren't any dying a slow death through neglect and in some cases, starvation. We can't take care of the ones we have, let alone provide room for more.

Maybe you should move to this happy little town. I hear the pizza is... so-so:

It's amazing that always at the root of every nutjob anti-abortionist is an anti-sex message. They want to punish people who have sex with having a child. Having a child shouldn't be a punishment it should be a reward. We are truly looking at old world ideas, where the desire to "domesticate" women, i.e. "trap" them with children and no options is their foremost objective. It may not even be clear to them, they are so seeped in their rhetoric. But I assure you at the heart of each of their arguments is a clear anti-sex, anti-pleasure, pro shame, pro punishment argument. They are prudes and puritans at heart that would have joyfully burned the witches, whipped their slaves and slaughtered the "dark heathens" of the West. It's the same exact mind set anyway you want to dress it up with crazy "anti-feminist" rhetoric. The basic premise is fire and brimestone for anyone who dares to have sex for pleasure and live a life free from old world shame and control. At the heart of their argument they are terrified of woman having sex at all for pleaure, they are horrified about women enaging in any form of freedom of expression or sexuality. These are anti-sex nutjobs that should be relegated tot he trash heap of history or at best a therapists office.
