Lessons from the University of Wisconsin Campaign to
Divest from Companies Providing Military Aid to Israel

Speakers:

Nasser Abufarha, UW PHD candidate, T.A. member of (TAWP) and leader of the University of Wisconsin Divest from Israel Campaign

Mark Evenson, President Elect of The Association of University of Wisconsin Professionals (TAUWP), AFT

Join labor and community activists as we learn about the growing national campaign to divest public pension funds from Israel and to divest stocks from those US companies helping the Israeli military. As a result of special legislation supported by the California state legislature, public pension funds for state workers, teachers and University of California and the California State University system are helping to fund the Israeli government by the purchase of Israeli bonds and by companies that provide support for the military in Israel. This financial and material support is used to further the apartheid wall being constructed by Israel and the discriminatory policies against Palestinians on both sides of their border. Nasser Abhfarha and Mark Eveson have been leaders and advocates for action by the University of Wisconsin on the these issues and they will discuss their campaign (http://alawda.rso.wisc.edu), why labor has joined it and what can be done in California.

On February 11, 2006 10:00 AM there will be a Public Workers' Breakfast with Abufarha and Evenson at the Blue Muse Restaurant (409 Gough St./Hayes) The breakfast cost is $13.00. This includes coffee and one entree. Abufarha will outline the work of their committee and how they have educated their union about these issues. Please make reservations by calling Labor Video Project at (415) 282-1908.

Film screening: "Voices of Dissent: Activism & American Democracy"
With filmmaker Karil Daniels

An award-winning video documentary about defending our American heritage of First Amendment rights and civil liberties against government attempts to repress democracy and our freedom to dissent. It includes many of the surprising and creative ways Americans have found to express their views in dissent against the Bush administration policy of war in Iraq. Featuring Martin Sheen, Woody Harrelson, Al Franken, Arianna Huffington, Daniel Ellsberg, Medea Benjamin, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Ambassador Joseph Wilson, Norman Solomon, Will Durst, Rene Hicks, Starhawk, Drew Dellinger, Ron Kovic and many more.

Using events, theater, song, dance, comedy, satire, music, poetry, interviews with many well-known personalities and the wisdom of our founding fathers, VOICES reminds us of our roots and the importance of protecting authentic democracy. It challenges anyone who would limit the freedoms and civil liberties granted in the Constitution and Bill of Rights as fundamentally un-American, even if they are our own leaders. It inspires viewers to speak out, vote and actively protect our heritage of democracy, before we lose it.

Sponsored by New College Center for Education and Social Action.

For more information call: Jon Garfield at 415-437-3425.

by come right out and say it?
An unarmed Israel is a long-gone Israel. Why don't you just call for the destruction you imply?

One might be forgiven for thinking that such honesty would make it harder to generate support from, say, labor, or academia, where Israel has as many friends as enemies?
Death to the Zionist entity, and to any of its citizens who are not wlling to renounce ethnic supremacy and live as equals with the other people of Palestine.

Slight correction -- the title should be " Lessons from the FAILED University of Wisconsin Campaign to Divest from Companies Providing Military Aid to Israel." As the blurb fails to mention, the University of Wisconsin Board of Trustees is on record opposing such a boycott in the university system, and as far as I know the only place the campaign was able to get anything like a yes vote was the grad student union on a tiny side campuses somewhere, in a vote even they acknowledged was merely symbolic given the firmness of the stance of the Board of Trustees.

But go ahead. Keep hitting your head against that brick wall, if it makes you feel good.

That's *exactly* what they told the campaign to divest from Isreal's racist partner, South Africa.

(S)he who laughs last, laughs best.

Hahahahahaha.
by will see it last
Death to the SF-IMC entity and to all its posters and editors who don't renounce racist sentiments concerning the Jews.

by bunk logic
This is called "begging the question".

In fact, SF-IMC's editors *have* no racist sentiments concerning the Jews to renounce. Any poster who does is hidden immediately.

>the (sic) Jews

To lump all Jews together in a single group, as if they were all the same, by calling them *the* Jews, is racist by definition. Jews are every bit as varied as non Jews. To deny this disrespects every Jew.
by anti-racist
This is called "begging the answer".

In fact, SF-IMC's editors, like the one above,* have* racist sentiments concerning the Jews to renounce. Any poster who does isn't necessarily hidden immediately. To deflect attention to what the posters do so that you wouldn't have to renounce your antisemitism is bunk logic.

>To lump all Jews together in a single group, as if they were all the same, by calling them *the* Jews, is racist by definition. Jews are every bit as varied as non Jews. To deny this disrespects every Jew.

Exactly. Which is why Lee Doyle the SF-IMC editor is racist by definition. He is a disgrace to Indymedia, the Global Justice Movement and every IMCista. He should hang his head in shame. His mentors, the Nazis, would be proud of him.

narcissie: "That's *exactly* what they told the campaign"

Your beating your head against the wall has made you delusory. The South African boycott campaign took off extremely quickly once it got national attention. The boycott-Israel campaign got its national attention in 2002, popping up in dozens of campuses, and immediately fell off the table on all those dozens of campuses. Caterpillar laughed off a boycott measure -- not even a boycott measure, but the preliminaries to a potential boycott measure -- by a mere thirty to one. And so on.

Why? The South African boycott campaign was opposed only by the apathetic. The boycott-Israel campaign -- or rather the tattered remnants of it -- was strongly opposed from the start, and gets stamped out almost immediately whenever there's even a brief glimmer of life.

You might take a look, for example, at what's just happened at the American Association of University Professors.

But I'm glad you think it's something you should put your energy into, nessie. In fact, you should put even _more_ energy into it. Why? Because I don't think I've seen a campaign more designed to fail in twenty years.

I was there. No it didn't. It took years and years of struggle just to get national attention. Even then it tokk years and years more to have an effect. But it eventually worked, and was a significant factor in the fall of SA apartheid. Israeli apartheid will suffer the very same fate. It's only a matter of time. One partner down. One to go.
by another rabid anti-Zionist lie
There's no Israeli apartheid. Some forms of discrimination? Yes. Apartheid? No. Ignore the crypto-Nazi anti-Zionist propaganda mill.
by another Zionist lie
In Occupied Palestine, which includes Israel "proper," Jews have rights that non Jews do not.. They have their own neighborhoods, their own roads and their own army. Non Jews are second class citizens. That's apartheid. The only difference between "Whites Only" and "Jews Only" is the physical location of the signs.

The Israeli lobby in Washington has taken over our Congress and successfully extracts billions of US taxpayers dollars annually. This big cash infusion enables ongoing illegal Israeli settlement expansion, construction of the aparteid wall, and military build-up including nuclear weapons. There is plenty of money left over to keep the Israeli lobbists in Washington flush so they can continue to manipulate our politicians and keep the money coming to Israel. It's a vicious circle...I'm glad to see citizens take some action! Shutting off some of the money via divestment will get their attention; an appeal for lawful behavior certainly falls on deaf ears!

Me: "The South African boycott campaign took off extremely quickly once it got national"

Nessie: "It took years and years of struggle just to get national attention."

Me: learn to read, nessie.

by democracy
Israel is a democracy. The Arab Citizens of israel have the right to vote and actively participate in Government. There are 11 Arab representatives in the Israeli Parliamnet today.
Israel is the only country in history where africans were brought in as brothers, not as slaves

From Ben- Gurion,(Shabtai Teveth, Ben-Gurion and the Palestinian Arabs: From Peace to War, London: Oxford University Press, 1985.)

"We do not want to create a situation like that which exists in South Africa, where the whites are the owners and rulers, and the blacks are the workers. If we do not do all kinds of work, easy and hard, skilled and unskilled, if we become merely landlords, then this will not be our homeland "
by anti-Zionist
>The Arab Citizens of israel have the right to vote and actively participate in Government.

Most Arabs under Israeli control are not citizens. They have no rights. Even in Israel "proper," Arabs are second class citizens with fewer rights than Jews, especially as regards land transfers.

Also, any Jew, no matter where they were born, has a legal right to move to Israel. Arabs who were born there, but fled Zionist aggression and mass murder, have no right of return.

Democracy? Gimme a break.
by Yemen?
Israel is one of the most open societies in the world. Out of a population of 6.7 million, about 1.3 million — 20 percent of the population — are non-Jews

Arabic is an official language in Israel. More than 300,000 Arab children attend Israeli schools. At the time of Israel's founding, there was one Arab high school in the country. Today, there are hundreds of Arab schools.

In 2002, the Israeli Supreme Court also ruled that the government cannot allocate land based on religion or ethnicity, and may not prevent Arab citizens from living wherever they choose.

The only legal distinction between The Israeli Arabs and the Israeli Jews is that the Israeliu Arabs are not obligated to participate in military service. However, some chose to do so.

Compare and contrast that, kiddies, to the Moslem States of the Middle EAst.

The Arab Human Development Report published by Arab researchers from the UN Development Program concluded that Arab countries had the lowest freedom score in the world. They also had the lowest rating for "voice and accountability," a measure of various aspects of the political process, civil liberties, political rights and independence of the media.

After living in the North African and Arab Middle East for enturies, nearly 900,000 Jews were kicked out, many with just the clothes on their back. These are the forgotten refugees of the modern Middle East.
by funny thing about Israel
Thats the funny thing about Israel, everyone, Jew, Christian, Druze , Moslem , Bahai, etc, has the same rights. As compared to say, Jordan, where simply being a Jew disqualifies one for citizenship and yet its the hypocrites here that protest the wrong side.
by TW
Oh no, nessie knows better

Israel's ashkenazim elite are such psychotic bigot assholes THEY EVEN DISCRIMINATE AGAINST OTHER JEWS!!!!!!!!!

http://www.levantinecenter.org/pages/chetrit_dodin_interview.html

8/28/1971 -- Zion Square, Jerusalem. Mizrahi Jews demonstrate by the thousands, burning an effigy of Golda Meir. “Israel is a state in which half the population are kings, and the other half are treated as exploited slaves – we will burn it down.”

Golda Meir's reply (10/15/1971): “[the Mizrahim] brought discrimination with them. Back in the countries they came from, there was discrimination against them.”

So you see, this chutzpah tactic of using "persecution of Jews" as an all-purpose method of excusing EVVRREEEEETHING Israel does is not new, oh no. It's the Grand Unifying Theory of zio-bullshit
by "Arab Only" signs
In 22 Arab countries, Jews have been murdered and expelled. Their property has been confiscated. They have been denied citizenship, the right to vote or to own land.

Even in Jordan, that "most western" of the Middle East countries the charter states that any Palestinian may become a citizen of Jordan unless he/she is a Jew.

The Islamic Middle eastern countries are among the most repressive in the world today. Israel remains a beacon of light and of hope
