Where's the Love?

by Dan Waterhouse, NewsLink & Queer Eye
Counter demonstration planned at Fresno State on Monday, February 13th at 1 p.m.
“We have had it!”

Students and faculty at Fresno State have had enough of spiritual violence being preached on their campus.

In response to the unwelcome intrusions of “hate speech” preachers Anthony Munoz and Matt Bourgault, a coalition of students, faculty and community members has been created. The group counts gays, straights, and women of all persuasions among its members.

Members will be taking part in the demonstration, organized by POWER–People Organized for Women’s Empowerment and Representation–countering the preachers’ messages of hate on Lincoln’s Birthday.

The demonstration will be in the Free Speech Area in front of the University Student Union.

Munoz, who is pastor of the Pentecostal Souls Harbor Holiness Church in Pinedale, has been preaching in the Free Speech Area for several years. His message typically includes: “Sodomy, it’s to DIE for” and signs promoting the idea that AIDS is the ideal combatant of homosexuality.

Munoz also condemns women, Muslims, Catholics, and anyone else he thinks is sinful.

While most people try to ignore him, others are angered by his message.

In the beginning of February, University police were called to keep Munoz and a crowd separated after several people tried to knock Munoz off the table he was preaching from.

Munoz was joined by a preacher linked to “God Hate Fags” Fred Phelps in early February. “Brother Matt”–Matt Bourgault–is a traveling Pentecostal street preacher who roams the nation’s college campuses from his home base in Kinard, Florida.

Bourgault admits he does what he does to create controversy and provoke disturbances.

During one of his appearances, at the University of New Mexico, in October 2005, he spat on a woman student because he believed she is a “sinner.”

The coalition are considering several options: to get Munoz and his cohorts off campus, or to give voice to other perspectives. Group members agreed that the crisis could become a positive thing, by raising awareness on campus and creating coalitions among the campus community.

I would like to attend this counter demonstration. Is anybody going from Alameda/Oakland and have room for one?

Dan, have you ever even been to the campus to see Anthony preach? All I see in your article is a collection of common misconceptions that some people have of Anthony and his message. Also, you stated "His message typically includes: “Sodomy, it’s to DIE for” and signs promoting the idea that AIDS is the ideal combatant of homosexuality.". Unfortunately - DAN - this is untrue. Not only was the appearance of these signs an isolated occurrence (not at ALL typical), but those signs were brought by a campus preacher from out of state. And we know that Anthony can't be held responsible for the signs that others display. Additionally, Anthony does not "condemn . . . Muslims and Catholics". He disagrees with their beliefs and is vocal in his assertions - but this hardly warrants "condemning". As for your assertion that he "condemns women" - that is absurd and I feel no need to address your comment. As for the actions of Matt Bourgault - these have no bearing on Anthony or his character. Anthony's sole purpose on campus is to preach the gospel and expose the darkness of sin so that men could repent. And you may ask "How do you know him so well?". Because he's my pastor. I'm a student at Fresno City College but I am present for many of Anthony's sermons on campus. As one who knows Anthony's message and the purpose behind it, I am qualified to make bold assertions about it. You Dan - as one who has not even INTERVIEWED him - are not.

You should be offended with Matt's preaching. He does not go out like these other soft spoken money hungry preachers to tickle your ears he wants you to get convicted about the way you are living and repent before your time comes. He is concerned unlike most preachers about where you will be spending your eternity. Matt needs to be heard he is a preacher called by God to preach the Bible and convict you so you can be saved and go to Heaven.
