Why Coretta Scott King is a hero to the Haitian people
In my neighborhood in Port-au-Prince there is a street named after the leader, Martin Luther King. I didn't know much about him until recently, when my children learned in school about the American Blacks and their fight for human rights.
My daughter is a very good student, and the teacher allowed her to take home a paper about the wife of this man, Coretta Scott King, and she read it to me.
Coretta is a sister of the Haitian people. She is remembered for her husband, but she was also a freedom fighter who cared about the rights of children, ordinary people, peasants and Black people in other countries. Her life was threatened and her home was firebombed because she spoke up when some people, those in the government and the wealthy white people, wanted her to be quiet.
