Can you feel the vibration of “unknown” pioneering souls who cry out for justice?

Desecrated burial grounds of early Negro Hill pioneers offer a key sign of a people who have forgotten there past, thus face a limiting future.

i’ve been down so longgggg, gettin’up never much crosses my mind… Ole’ Tyme Sayin’s…

Negro Hill, California history comes alive.
The Sesquicentennial Celebration of the California Colored Convention ( 1855-1865.)

The history of Negro Hill, CA is an excellent place to begin to share our 150+ year statewide celebration.

In 1854, Newton Miller noted that in his racially mixed Methodist Church at Negro Hill, “Negroes constitute nearly all the church members and are a majority of the congregation.” Negro Hill was founded in early 1848 along the American River, east of Leidesdorff Ranch, near today’s City of Folsom.

1830 – 1850 Negro Seamen Acts were established at most major southern seaports in the United States. They prohibited free men of African ancestry from their lucrative career in the maritime industry. Many Negro seamen became farmers in 1840’s Mexican California.

The Gold Rush of 1848 and California U.S. statehood in 1850 expedited an influx of industrious free men of African ancestry to California. Negro Hill, CA is an extraordinary early Gold Rush community and maintains a golden historical legacy of the free migration of American citizens of African ancestry.

In 1849 three enterprising men from the New England seaboard named Vosey, Long and French opened a store and boarding house called the Civil Usage House. Business was good. Gold Rush “fever” swept across the world, like wildfire and brought Irish, Spanish, Portuguese, Mormon, Chinese and Americans from all corners of our new United States. Early success was assured in Negro Hill and brought global attention to El Dorado County.

Charles Crocker, brother of Edwin Crocker and Dewitt Stanford, brother of Leland Stanford, joined the Negro Hill business community competing directly with the Negro established trade and commerce entities. In 1853, Negro Hill population exceeded 1200 and could boast of a multiethnic community unmatched outside the Port of San Francisco. Negro Hill was the hub of a regional community that included Salmon Falls, Massachusetts Flat, Chile Hill, Mormon Island and many mining camps along the American River.

By 1854, portions of the deeply religious community of Negro Hill had deteroriated into a Wild West saloon and place of ill repute while the California State Legislature passed laws prohibiting Blacks from testifying in court, homesteading land, voting and public education, these and other environmental hazards helped to destroy the harmonious beginnings of Negro Hill, CA.

A group of drunken, broke and destitute white citizens of the village of Negro Hills began to terrorize the Negro business community. Theft, fights and lynching were often encouraged because of the legal prohibition of equal access to the law in early California State History.

In 1855, the first California Colored Convention began to address the disenfranchisement brought about by our California State Legislature. Negro Hill was effectively destroyed to the benefit of the Crocker, Stanford and other “prominent” families.

Today, California State Historical Landmark No. 570 of Negro Hill is missing. A small portion Negro Hill Cemetery was relocated during the 1954 construction of Folsom Dam; however, government approval sought fit to rename Historic Negro Hills, “Nigger Hill” on 36 “unknown” grave markers.

A people, who have forgotten their name, will have a limited future unknown, and forgotten.

The article was about Black Pioneers and how Whites did all in their power to destroy any little freedom that Blacks acquired and any progress made by Black Pioneers.

We can say the same about the rampant killing and shooting of innocent Native Americans earlier by Whites. California was stolen from them and 18 treaties signed between the U.S. Government and Native American tribes never ratified. California rightfully belongs to the Native Americans.

In the early 1800s again and again Blacks were treated as second class citizens. In fact they were not recognized as human beings from the treatment they got on a daily basis.

Talking about character White killed innocent Native American and Blacks with no questions asked until 1924. Native American scalps fetched $5 and any person of color could be mistreated by Whites - no questions asked.

The same with the all Black Buffalo Soldiers who helped the Early Pioneers. The same with the early Chinese and it goes on and on to this day. The good done was not recognized and those that helped were spat upon and this was done by ignorant Whites.

There were civilized Nations in Africa, China, India, South America, and Middleeast such as Babylonia when most Whites in their countries were uncivilized. This is a fact.

President Lincoln had his dark side and so did President Jefferson. President Bill Clinton had his dark side and so does President George W. Bush. All White men so where is the logic to infuse some deeds of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. even if they were true in this equation about the early Black Pioneers.

When it comes to character the White Person is least to be trusted.

When it comes to stealing the White Person is first. Be it land in foreign nations to the deeds linked with Enron. The White judicial system stinks to high heaven. They even stole an Election and brought to fore a corrupt lying government.

History has NOT been kind to the Black Person and this is a fact.

This land belongs to the Native American and he will tell you the truth. The Native American never, ever called the Black Person as one talking with a forked tongue. He did about Whites and still does.

The Founding Fathers of American history learned from the wise Six Nations and from certain Black Intelectuals - history will NOT give such facts a prominent exposure.

Did the Whites steal the very government they call a democracy from the Six Nations? Is this nation a Republic? Does the Electoral System defy logic and speak more of feudalism? Who really has character among all peoples in this world?

Why do have to impeach White Presidents in this nation?

And why does the White House lie? The White House as was much of Washington DC was built by Blacks. A fact that is NOT told to many - together with many other significant contributions made by Blacks. Over 3000 inventions of significance.

Let us stick to the facts and not compare apples with oranges.

Let it be known to everyone that many Black Pioneers played an important role in the development and progress of California. They also did that all over the Nation and the world.

Here is San Francisco many a Black Businessperson man and woman played an important role. Mary Pleasant and a host of other Blacks.

Let it be known that the White Person will always NOT level the playing field and will continue talking in forked tongues. He is a born liar.

He continues to do that do all over the world and is not trusted.

History such as this is the key to success of Black students. If you know I have a history, you will respect me. If I know I have a history, I will respect myself.

I was raised in Sacramento, being born in 1961 I wasn't exposed to some of the bigotry I was "informed" about. I did notice the privilidged treatment some got, and as I became aware of more Black History I'm convinced it is the most important subject our young people need.

If anything becomes of this, my hope is that someone who has the power to effect change in the reporting of History does so. It is equally important that all, and particularly White youth know all of the negativeness associated with the U.S., it may go a long way to change their TV news based perceptions.

Michael Harris claims the historic name of Negro Hills was changed by the government in 1954 to Nigger Hill. He implies that the original name of the community was Negro Hills. I don't believe this is true. I'm a professional land surveyor and I have in my possession a Bureau of Land Management map dated 1853 where the name of the community is clearly marked Nigger Hill. These are the township and section maps created when most public land in the US was first subdivided. I believe the government in 1954 actually corrected the historically inaccurate name of Negro Hill to it's original name of Nigger Hill.

As a side note, the original maps were destroyed in the great San Francisco earthquake and its resulting fire. The maps I have were re-drawn sometime after the quake from the original surveyor's field notes. It's possible the names were changed at that time. One would need to get copies of the original notes from the BLM office in Sacramento to verify.
