California State University East Bay's Alliance for Social Justice tabled today in front of the University Union to raise awareness about the threat on women's reproductive rights and to turn out students to the January 21 Counter march to the “Walk for Life March.” The “Walk for Life” march will take place in San Francisco tomorrow and is being supported by the religious right.

Gregg Horton, President, and Tina Phillips, co-adviser supervised the table featuring information, pamphlets on women's health, how to get health services on campus, and the morning after pill, fliers, and other materials that will help inform students of ways to get involved to stop the erosion of reproductive rights in America. Wire coat hangers were displayed on the ground with notes attached to them that read “For coats, not abortions.” This demonstration symbolizes the tools used by desperate women in need of reproductive health services that were denied to them in the past. Before Roe V. Wade many women in America harmed themselves and killed themselves trying to self induce their own abortions.

Many students were supportive. There were no students who expressed anti-choice sediments. Some students did not know what the coat hangers were for, showing a lack of historical understanding, which Alliance for Social Justice was happy to inform them about. The Daily Review and Oakland Tribune came by to cover the story, but sadly our own campus newspaper, The Pioneer, did not. Maybe they felt this issue was not news worthy? Such a pity. The threat to women's lives is very important to us and we know it is important to the student body.

Alliance for Social Justice demands we never go back. Women have the right to make their own decisions regarding their own bodies. Save women's lives; keep abortion safe and legal. We encourage people to come out to the march starting at 11am this Saturday at Pier 1 in San Francisco. The event is being sponsored by many groups including the Bay Area Socialist Party and the Peace and Freedom Party (which Tina is a member of). The main organizer is Bacorr (Bay Area Coalition for Our Reproductive Rights). To learn more about the counter march visit http://www.bacorr.org/. Tina and Gregg are proud of the work they are doing on campus. They plan to keep trying to wake up the sleep walking campus and organize students to fight for justice. Eight new members of Alliance for Social Justice signed up just today. There is hope yet.
