Activists Demand Pelosi Defund Iraq War, Support Impeachment
San Francisco (January 15, 2006) – Anti-War activists pressed local congresswoman Nancy Pelosi on her continued support of the Iraq War by way of continued funding for the illegal, unjust occupation – despite her public criticisms of the war.
San Francisco (January 15, 2006) – Anti-War activists pressed local congresswoman Nancy Pelosi on her continued support of the Iraq War by way of continued funding for the illegal, unjust occupation – despite her public criticisms of the war. Pelosi also reiterated her refusal to sign on to impeachment hearings of President Bush, despite the evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors (illegal war, spying, and torture just to start with) already laid bare for the world to see. Before the event even began, members of CODEPINK, College Not Combat, Not in Our Name and others picketed outside the Marina Middle School “town hall meeting.” Following Pelosi’s presentation members of CODEPINK made their way to the front of the hall were they were joined by dozens of other anti-war activists. When it began apparent that there were at least sixty identifiable anti-war activists in the hall, including members of Iraq Veterans Against the War and Military Families Speak Out sitting in the front rows, secret service and local police scuttled plans to eject the protesters. Pelosi tried to make the best of the situation, but probably was not expecting hundreds of boos when she explained that she was not going to support impeachment proceedings, yet folks should put their energies into electing more Democrats if they want change.

Great job Code Pink! Let's keep the pressure on. And great pics too!
Pelosi is regarded nationally as staunchly opposed to the war in Iraq. She strongly opposed the war from the start, endorsed the Murtha resolution and has called for our troops to come home. But supporting the troops and supporting the war are simply two different issues, a distinction Pelosi makes that reverberates throughout the country.
In the national debate about this unjust war, she's working to find the fastest and most effective way to bring the war to an end. That includes defeating Republicans and electing people to Congress to regain the Democratic majority needed to stop the war.
Regarding impeachment, wresting control from the Republican majorities is critical to any serious consideration in Congress. We know the Republicans won't investigate their own house, we need the power to make it happen.
How do we do this? All of us opposed to the war must speak out and try to sway public opinion across this country. But let's not forget who our friends really are. We need both the people power and the legislative power to overcome. We have to take back Congress in 2006!
