Officer Andrew Cohen produces yet another film

by Ebony Colbert via SF Bay View (reposted)
Officer Andrew Cohen wrote to me on Monday, Jan. 2, to promote his brand new film, “Inside SFPD: The Bayview,” his attempt at “rebuilding trust in the Bayview community.” After reading my response to his email, he immediately called to discuss how he felt he had been vilified in the media and how his new film would help to build trust between the police and Bayview residents. I don’t know you personally, but if those “vignettes,” as you call them, are any indication of the type of person you are, I’d have to say that you have a very perverse sense of humor. Even so, that does not make you a bad person, just poorly supervised and sadly misled. I’m surprised that you’ve found the time, in such a “stressful” job, to make another video. Congrats!

I am a Bayview resident, born and raised, through and through, thick and thin. I don’t get paid to live here. I’m here because I want to be. And the thousands of citizens who live here and raise their kids here, want to be.

What disturbs me is that our police precinct seems to be filled to the brim with officers who don’t want to be here, or, if they do, they seem to be using my community and my people as target practice, trying to push us out to make room for a new type of Bayview resident.

To you guys, we’re perfect material for ”comedy videos” – just another crackhead to hit with a squad car, just another welfare mother, just another gang banger. What’s wrong with you people?

Everyone is saying we’re playing “the race card.” I’d have to agree, considering that it’s the only card we’ve been given in a game that was never dealt in our favor.

I’ve watched white officers on more than one occasion frisk and physically assault young Black men. Many have had drugs planted on them; some have even been shot and killed. Either way, they have been unjustly removed, emotionally, mentally and physically, from their families – and that is a crime.
