Background:

The US and Israel government leaders have openly and repeatedly made threats of military action for a change of regime in Iran since George W. Bush.s January 2002 State of Union Speech which labelled Iran as part of the axis of evil. A regime change in Iran is in accord with the neo-conservatives grand plan of the Project of the New American Century of which the present disaster in Iraq is the first major outcome. While Mohammad Khatami, the then Iranian President, was urging a dialogue among civilizations, President Bush.s call for a crusader war instigated a massive campaign of demonization of Islam and Iran in the western media. Based on a long category of blatant untruths, half-truths, distortion and double standards, the US government accuses Iran of a host of charges including support for Palestinian .terrorism., support for Al Qaeda, interference in Iraq and support for the insurgents, and above all a covert nuclear weapons programme. In recent weeks, the remarks of Ahmadinejad, the new Iranian President, about Israel and the Holocaust have played strongly into the hands of the Israel and US governments which have fully exploited these remarks to prepare the world public opinion for imposition of UN sanctions against Iran. Such sanctions will be the prelude for a military attack which can lead to a fully fledged new war in the Middle East, even more horrifying than the present situation in Iraq and threatening peace and stability all around the Middle East and beyond. It has even been reported by the American Conservative that the Pentagon, acting under instructions from Vice President Dick Cheney.s office, has tasked the United States Strategic Command to use tactical nuclear strikes against Iran. This report has not been denied or commented by the Pentagon; see http://www.amconmag.com/2005_08_01/article3.html

Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran (CASMII), http://www.campaigniran.org, was launched on December 1st 2005 to build an effective international opposition to the US and Israel war drive against Iran. CASMII.s most important achievement so far has been to persuade the International Peace Conference held in London on December 10th to pass an additional resolution to .call on the anti war movement all around the world to oppose any attack against Iran or Syria..
