Police beating of SF Western Addition Activist Ace Washington

Brother Ace Washington truly has in going on: a social justice activist in SF Western Addition District for decades, Ace is an Anchor on KPOO and Direct Access TV Ch. 29, videotapes hearings of the weekly SF Police Commission and Board of Supervisors on SF.GOV Channel, has his own desk in City Hall Press room #247, is a singer and a producer, owns his own security business, is a painting contractor, new House Manager at Idriss Safe Haven Collective in SF Bayview Hunters Point, and seats on Idriss Stelley Foundation Board of Directors and SF African American Community Policing Relations Board.
There is no time for Brother Ace for much reprieve or fun within his tight schedule...You would assume that this well respected and dedicated member of our community would be shielded from injustice.... Guess again.
Last Friday night, Ace Washington stopped at Rassala's Jazz club on Fillmore and O'Farrel at the end of an exhausting day, to talk to a friend. One of the club's manager told him that he was not welcome in the club and exhorted patrons: "Don't talk to him! He is not welcome in our community !". Ace questioned the allegation and she stated that she was calling the police, upon which Ace responded: "Fine! Please do call the police !".
While Ace stood outside of Rassala's, 4 police officers (none of them AfriKan American), apprehended him, wrestled him to the ground, threatened him with batons and forcefully applied pressure to his legs and chest. One officer twisted his fingers backward while handcuffed, while 8 officers sat on this neck and back, pushing on his buttock with boot and repeatedly kicking his left ankle.
Ace cried out in pain, asking repeatedly what the charges were against him, while witnesses gathered from the club and shops across the street, and 3 additional police cars arrived at the scene. Once arrested and forced into the police car, his fingers were twisted backward again.
Ace was released at 5:30 am on Saturday, charged with assault, resisting arrest and trespassing, although Rassala's seemingly does not have any restraining order against him. When he arrived at Idriss Safe Haven Collective late morning, Ace recounted his ordeal ... and showed me his injuries: substantial swelling and knots on his left leg above the ankle which was stomped on (broken skin), chest, wrists and fingers, inflicted while Ace was on the ground, face down. The brother was exhausted and shook up, just wanted to get a few hours of sleep to recuperate from his beating !
I immediately alerted all other Idriss Stelley Foundation Board members and the AACPRB, as well as Anti Police Brutality entities in the Bay Area. Idriss Stelley Foundation is hiring a forensic photographer to take irrefutable pictures of Ace's injuries (Ace took his own pictures but being dark skin, these might not be conclusive in terms of properly showing bruising), and a private doctor to provide him with a medical report, as emergency interns and staff can often be intimidated and manipulated by the authorities...
As soon as he found out on Saturday, Maurice Campbell, ISF Board Member and Director of Community First Coalition, and David Grace from Indymedia got on the air on my show "SF VILLAGE VOICE" / Indybay Enemy Combatant Radio (SF and nationwide) about the shameless PD assault of Brother Ace Washington. Time was the essence: silence kills in these PD brutalization cases, as Ace would be more at risk, considered as a potential liability for PD and the City, given his prominent activist position in our community, if he did not publicize his fate ASAP ! Ace called on the show and our auditors got to listen live his detail recount of the assault, in a very shaken voice.
SF NAACP Leaman McGriff, (also a member of AACPRB) who was a patron of Rassala's that night stated that he heard the commotion, but "it was very dark outside" and he "didn't know at the time that the incident involved Ace".
A somber New Year's Eve indeed... while many of us extrapolate on the "Blue Ribbon" investigation of the PD racist, sexist and homophobic videotape to amount to nothing but the full exoneration of the Men in Blue, we sadly get confirmation on the SFPD organization KKKulture implementing WWBB ("Walking While Being Black"), with no worries about accountability whatsoever.
A blessing in disguise? If the assault had occurred away from street lights and witnesses, Brother Ace would probably never have made it back to Idriss Safe Haven Collective that Saturday morning, just another casualty of war against the Poor, Black and Brown, regardless of status, visibility or community involvement.
According to Ace Washington: "That encounter on Friday with the police on Fillmore in the Northern Station District in my own community really opened my eyes and gave me first hand experience with police brutality. As a member of ISF and AACPR Board (Western Addition Branch), it is part of my duty to monitor and report these type of police misconducts citywide. After routinely going to these Police Commission meetings , hearing all public comments on police brutlality, and suffering a PD assault as a 260 pd., 5'11'' Black man, I totally felt helpless and victimized for the first time in my life by the Men in Blue. I personally want to take this opportunity to tell our Mayor Newsome, Chief Heather Fong as well as the Police Commission there there is a great need for restructuring and training SFPD as it relates to community policing, after experiencing it first hand. "Ace, On DA Case", now I have a Case ! Listen to my radio show this coming Friday January 6th , one day after my court case on KPOO 89.5 f.m. 4 pm to 5:30 pm, "Ace in your Ear, Maling it Loud and Clear!"
Ace Washington is summoned to appear in Court at the Hall of Injustice at 850 Bryant, SF, Thursday January 5, 2006, 9 am, #101
Brothers and Sisters, we gonna fill up that court room ! Are you with us?

San Francisco -- Amid accusations of bias against cross-dressers and transsexuals, the San Francisco Police Department has agreed to train new recruits and veteran officers to be more sensitive to transgender people.
The move comes at the request of community activists and the Office of Citizen Complaints, the city's official police watchdog agency, concerned that officers have been less than respectful of transgender people. The complaints range from deliberately using the wrong pronoun when addressing suspects to more serious verbal and physical harassment.
"There has been a big problem," said Theresa Sparks, a male-to-female transsexual who serves on San Francisco Human Rights Commission.
Police Chief Fred Lau acknowledged yesterday that there is need for improvement and said most of the problems stem from misunderstanding and miscommunication.
Lau said the department will set up a program at the Police Academy for officers-in-training. Those with more experience will get their training at the start of their shifts in the stations and bureaus.
A joint task force convened by the Police Commission and the Human Rights Commission will draw up specific guidelines for such items as the appropriate use of language -- for example, when to use "he" and when to use "she," and proper treatment and documentation of transgender people who are taken into custody.
In addition, officers will undergo sensitivity training, including face-to- face discussions with transgender people about their lives. The Police Department has one transgender officer.
"As police get to know the community there will be fewer problems," Lau said.
The new policy is the latest victory for transgender activists in San Francisco. Earlier this year, the Board of Supervisors approved a plan to provide sex-change benefits for qualified city workers. In 1995, the city included transgender people in its nondiscrimination policy.
The Police Department already requires sensitivity training to deal with many groups of people, including Asians, Latinos and African Americans, seniors, women, the disabled and gays and lesbians.
"All these communities are part of San Francisco, and deserve the same kind of services as everyone else," Lau said.
The Office of Citizen Complaints first proposed the transgender policy in 1999. The Police Commission finally approved the plan this month.
The Oakland and West Hollywood police departments already have transgender training.
Sparks, the Human Rights Commissioner who lobbied for the San Francisco program, said she has been stopped by police in the Tenderloin on her way to a restaurant. They demanded to see her ID and asked what she's doing in the area,
which is frequented by transsexual prostitutes.
"They assume if there's a transgender person walking down the street in the Tenderloin it's probably because they're prostitutes," she said.
Shawna Virago, a member of TransAction, a transgender rights group, said she, too, has been harassed by police, but in Los Angeles, not San Francisco.
"Trans bias is a national bias, it's not just something found in law enforcement," said Virago, who works at Community United Against Violence, a San Francisco anti-violence group with roots in the gay and lesbian community.
The organization issued a report detailing complaints of harassment and violence it has received from transgender people.
Last year, Community United Against Violence recorded 71 complaints from male-to-female transsexuals. Nearly half involved law enforcement officers -- not all San Francisco police -- and security guards. Most of the complaints involved the use of language.
Six more complaints came from female-to-male transgender people, not all tied to law enforcement.
The Sheriff's Department, which runs San Francisco's jails, also trains its deputies on interaction with transgender people and provides separate jail space for transgender inmates. The policy was developed in consultation with leaders in the city's transgender community.
In 1999, a federal jury found that jailers strip-searched a transsexual woman without justification and awarded her $750,000 in damages. The amount was later reduced by about half.

A year ago an innocent man was crushed by 5 huge ''policemen'' on the 22 bus line in santa clara .the actual agressor was a white guy who nearly killed the innocent man who was tackled by the cops .white guy got away free. i have seen more police agression the past few years.they are on a rampage...
can certainly relate to what happened to Ace Washington. That same woman (speculation) called the police on me last year on the last evening of the Juneteenth Celebration. As I sat in Rassala's, a Black woman (clearly with mental issues) came in and hung her coat on the front door knob. The female behind the bar began giving the woman grief about the coat. I joined in by stating that if she was so concerned about how the place looked, she should clean up the floor -- which was cluttered with debris. The female behind the bar gave me an ugly look and asked what I had said. Of course, I reciprocated and repeated my displeasure at the filth of the floor. She had charged me $4.00 for a beer that she had served in a plastic cup. She didn't like what I had to say and told (not asked) me to leave. I told her I would leave when I finished drinking the $4.00 beer she had served me in a plastic cup. A Black man joined in on the protest and said that she had to right to put me out if I hadn't finished drinking the beer I had paid for. She then called her WHITE kitchen worker out as she picked up the phone.
I continued to finish my beer and the place was quiet. Before I took my final sip, the police came in the door. They looked puzzled because the place was quiet and peaceful. The female behind the bar called the officers over and said that I had been disturbing the peace. Others at the bar refuted what she was saying. She then told the officers she wanted me to leave. The police approached me and said that I had to leave at the female's request. I decided not to drink the last sip and got up and went outside. When I got outside, I saw five black and white units parked out front, full of officers. I asked the one who told me I had to leave what was said when the complaint came in for them to respond. He said that the caller stated that a group of people were tearing up the place and throwing things at the Rassala staff. So, the heifer that called the police, lied through her teeth, in order to get them riled enough to bring plenty of back-up, probably in hopes that I (and the gentleman on my side) would be brutalized like Ace was. Not one of the responding officers were Black! I pointed out to the police that the situation could have been messy, had they reacted the way the report came in, that violence was being heaped in Rassala's towards the staff.
The owner of Rassala's needs to put that female with the attitude towards Black folks in check! Until then, Black folks should STOP SPENDING MONEY WITH THAT BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENT UNTIL THEY GET THEIR S#&T TOGETHER AND STOP CALLING THE LAW ON BLACK FOLKS WHO HAVE DONE NOTHING! IF SHE IS PART OWNER, THE PLACE SHOULD BE BOYCOTTED UNTIL SHE APOLOGIZES! What happened to Ace Washington was no fluke. I have another friend -- as cool a brother as you could ask for -- who has been barred from Rassala's too. I heard that Leroy King, of the Redevelopment Agency Commission, is also part owner of that place. This should be brought to his attention if he is.
Peace,
Cäti

Dear Sister Cati
Thank you from the heart to you Cati Hawkins Okori, Sister Kathy Perry and Pastor Erris from AACPRB, and Leroy Moore from Idriss Stelley Foundation Board of Directors for showing up at the Police Commission this evening in support of Brother Ace Washington, savagely assaulted by 8 Northern Station "Peace Officers" last Friday night.
No thanks to the rest of AACPRB for not even giving a single call to their CO-member Ace Washington, to find out if he was ok, offer a ride to a doctor, or simply a word of encouragement and support since his beating from SFPD, in spite of my email alert and p[ersoal calls on 1-31-05
I am very confused. Community policing should start from home. I understand the concept of "organizing before mobilizing", however, when one of us is stricken, shouldn't crisis superseed caution?
Ace is going to court in the am Wed at 9 am at 850 Bryant St #101.
Let's see if the champions of community policing, who allegedly have been empowered by all Poor Communities of Color in San Francisco to defend their human rights will come to support their CO- Board member Ace Washington.
Hope they prove me wrong.
mesha
Director,
Idriss Stelley Foundation
AACPRB community participant.

I gotta tell ya Ace Washington is a thief. In my opinion he does not deserve help.
what has all this crap about thievery been about?
it's an undocumented smear by an anonymous poster unless you back it up
the assault on him by police, as reported here and elsewhere, mentions nothing about stealing being any part of it
if the story is about police roughing him up, or what have you, then thievery seems like a totally separate issue and the police do not have the right to batter him (I would add that cops never have a right to batter anyone, just detain them until a fair trial can be held)
if you have a personal issue with Ace, keep it personal
if you want to make public charges against him, you should back it up or not make them in the first place
otherwise, you have little credibility here and you could very well be a cop apologist for all we know

Ace is a bicth that has it comin to him. It has nothing to do with the fact that he is black, he has been bullying the community long enough! He is a convicted drug dealer that has been pimping his fellow African Americans for his own causes. He needs to get a job!
Same old vague charges and name-calling.
Still nothing verifiable.
You claim it has nothing to do with race and then in the very next sentence you go and use a racial stereotype ("pimping") to attack him. That in and of itself borders on racism.
Btw, what do you mean by "the community", as it sounds like you mean something other than "his fellow African Americans" you also refer to?
Only bullying around these parts are the still unsubstantiated charges you continue to make.

What a bunch of racists some people are who post here. One person writes "white kitchen worker". What does that have to do with anything?? And why call her a "hiefer"? For people that are supposed to be open minded you sure are NOT! And who cares if no black cops showed up?? Isn't it a true testament to our professionalism that we acted propery and treated you fairly (yes, ANY business owner can ask you to leave at ANY time!) and didn't let the bartender make up a false accusation? Geez, how sad that there are so many hypocrites in your group!!!
Where is Ace living these days ? Is he actually paying to live in a legal residency ? Where IS that boy workin' these days ? I know that cell phone don't pay it's own bill ! MIGHT DON'T MAKE NO RIGHT !!!! DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING would never condone Ace's actions !!!
I don’t and as far as I can remember have never heard of Ace Washingon until now. So I can’t say if he was a good person or a bad person because I never met him but even if he was a hardcore, drug dealing thug, (and the people making these types of statements have nothing to back up their claims, while there is much evidence given of the good things he has done for this community) it gives no one any right to beat him especially cops, it doesn’t even give that women the right to kick him out –because I doubt Mr. Washingon was selling drugs or had any on him or we would have heard about it on the news. He was an African American man having a drink after work. How dare he!
As for the cops comments about the statement of the man who had a similar experience at the same place for calling the white kitchen worker a: “white kitchen worker” I’m guessing the worker was white. And Mr. Washingon was black I think some one said that too. Since this is a case of discrimination these things do mater. As for calling the women a heifer, I would have called her a lying b---- if she charged me 4$ and then called the cops on me for some thing I didn’t do.
Every business has the right to refuse service to any one but when they do it because of the persons ethnicity they are breaking the law and so are cop when they beat people up for whatever reason.

People of all communties please read Cnspresents.com. There is no way you can deny that this article has all the facts and is totally true. Ace has a very bad reputation with the Fillmore, Bayview and the Hunters Point communities. I read the website and all facts are true. We know Ace and he is everything that this person has stated. People wake up do not let people like Ace continue to us, (all communities) for his personal gain. I know Ace very well and I personally know that Ace Washington refers to all Black Women as Black Bitches. He has no respect for the Black Community but to tape his victims to review later how to use the situation for his person gain. This man must be stopped. Talk to anyone in the Fillmore and Hunters Point Community and you will find out Ace Washington is working against the community.
People I have read cnspresents.com and all the facts are clear to me and I check out the facts and they are TRUE. This man needs to be beat by the black community. People like Ace destroy everything that black communities have fought for and he is a true threat to our community. What is wrong with you people when you say it does not matter about his past! Don't you realize he is still destroying black people! You need to check out the facts as I have and stop supporting this fake so call brother!
Ace is arested once again for 4 counts of terroist threats he made to a woman. What does it take to drop this so called Black Activist?
To whoever is signing under various cowardly peudonyms to spread stupid rumors about Ace Washington, and probably set up the slenderous website against him (you know who you are), you are in serious need of help...
