On Jan 13, 2005 at 4:00 PM on the steps of SF City hall workers will protest the racism, Discrimination
and corruption at SF City Hall. Black PUC chemist Anita Labossiere faces a trumped up
termination after exposing hanging nooses at the S. E. Sewage plant and 22 Black & Latino LIUNA 261 laborers

The commemoration of Martin Luther King’s birthday is not a happy one for Black, Latino and other workers in San Francisco.
Anita Labossiere, who discovered "hanging nooses" being put up at her work location to terrorize Blacks at South East Sewage Plant two years ago is now in the process of being terminated on trumped up charges. When she went public in the San Francisco Bay View, the PUC managers sought to drive her out of her job. Other Black workers have faced similar harassment. No report or investigation has been released to the public about these incidents by the PUC or the City Of San Francisco.

At the same time, Black and Latino men and women laborers from SF DPW who are members of LIUA Local 261and had many years of service with the city were laid off and replaced with workers from Hunter’s Point at $11.00 an hour.
Their supervisor Mohammed Nuru of DPW, had previously been investigated for illegally ordering SLUG workers to campaign for Newsom in the last mayoral election yet he still has his job.
This same Nuru was involved in these discharges of these DPW laborers and the most vocal workers who spoke out about them are still without jobs.
At the same time, Mayor Newsom, Nuru and the City had signed an agreement with the leadership of LIUNA 261 that new workers would be brought in a new classification doing much of the same work of these layed off workers but at 50% less pay. Newsom also signed an agreement that their union initiations and union dues would be paid for by the City of San Francisco.

This is a clear ethics violation and Mayor Newsom has been told personally by these laid off workers about this violation in March and December of 2005. Why is he covering this up and why has he not acted to put these workers back to work.
Even the Board of Supervisors passed a supplemental appropriation of $1.4 million to rectify this situation, yet the workers are still being retaliated against.
Call Mayor Newsom and ask him for some answers. Call The SF Board Of Supervisors and demand hearings on the growing corruption and discrimination scandal at the PUC and DPW and at SF City Hall.

"Trust Me" Mayor Newsom Beginning To Sounds Like Other Pols
On December 21,2005 I had the opportunity to sit in on a meeting between the Mayor of San Francisco, his supervisor of Human Resources and a group of laid off
workers. The LIUNA 261 SF City Laborers had requested the meeting to discuss the reason why they had not been reinstated to jobs from which they had been layed off illegally. These laborers
had been told 7 months ago that money had been put into the budget to rectify the discriminatory discharges by the Board Of Supervisors. Some had been rehired but
the vocal ones who had spoken up about the discrimination are still without jobs.
The mayor, Gavin Newsome, said he believed in collaboration and asked his manager of HR to explain to him what the problem was. It seems Byzantine bureaucracy
raised its ugly head and therein lies the problem. Civil Service rules had been applied and in doing so had not reinstated these jobs. The HR supervisor gave an explanation which did not set well with the laborers.
The Mayor reassured the laborers that he would investigate the matter again and get back to them. One of the labor advocates Sylvia Alverez Lynch said directly to the Mayor
that the problem might be that his personal staff had shielded him from issues such as this. He waved her off and said to the group, "trust me". I was sitting directly opposite him at
this long table and I blurted out "that's what Bush said". The room fell silent and the mayor grimaced. Gavin Newsome should know better than to repeat a phrase that
would automatically put him in the same barrel as all the rest of the politicians. "Trust Me" is a like a pat on the head and these people need jobs not paternalistic
reassurances from the Mayor.
